Avensis emergency call malfunction

Hi, I'm having a strange issue with my 2006 Toyota Avensis gasoline model. The emergency call system seems to have malfunctioned. I'm getting an error stored in the error memory, an error message pops up in the speedometer, and the warning light is on. I've checked the fuses and they seem okay. Has anyone experienced something similar? Any ideas before I take it to a mechanic?

Good day. The symptoms you describe are indeed indicative of a telematics control module issue. It's quite common for the emergency call systems in vehicles of that era to exhibit such problems, often stemming from degradation in the wiring or connectors. I must inquire, have you attempted a full system reset by disconnecting the battery for a period? While it's a rudimentary measure, it occasionally resolves minor glitches.

Thanks for the quick response! I haven't tried disconnecting the battery yet. How long should I leave it disconnected? And is there any risk of messing up other systems by doing that? I remember having issues with the radio code on another car once after disconnecting the battery.

Acknowledged. Disconnecting the battery for a minimum of thirty minutes should suffice for a comprehensive system reset. While there is a marginal risk of affecting other electronic components, such as the radio or the engine control unit's learned parameters, it is generally minimal. However, given the specific nature of the emergency call system and its critical safety function, I strongly advise a professional diagnostic evaluation at a reputable workshop. The error you're experiencing could point to a deeper issue than a simple reset can resolve. I had a similar emergency call problem with my BMW a while back, turned out to be a faulty module and I almost ended up with a hefty bill for further diagnostics because I delayed taking it to a shop.

Okay, I understand. Thanks a lot for your advice! I took it to the shop today, and you were spot on – it was a defective cable or plug connection, as they suspected. Cost me 95€ to get it fixed. Much appreciated!
