Avensis exhaust temperature sensor fault

I've got a problem with my 2008 Toyota Avensis diesel. The check engine light is on, and I've noticed reduced engine power and increased fuel consumption. The car has 95953 km on the clock. I've scanned it, and it points to a faulty exhaust temperature sensor. Any ideas?

I had similar issues with my Avensis. Have you checked for any exhaust leaks upstream of the sensor? That was the root cause in my case.

Interesting. How did an exhaust leak trigger the exhaust temperature sensor fault? Was it throwing the engine management system off?

Yeah, the leak messes with the exhaust gas temperature, which the sensor then picks up. The ECU thinks there's a problem and throws the code, plus limits power to protect things. I'd get it checked by a workshop. They'll be able to pinpoint the leak and see if the sensor itself also needs replacing.

Thanks for the advice! It turned out to be a small crack in the exhaust manifold, right before the sensor. Got it welded and the sensor replaced as a precaution. Cost me 265€. Running smoothly now!
