Aveo Loss of Power EGR Valve
Summary of the thread
A 2015 Chevrolet Aveo with a diesel engine experienced a loss of power, check engine light activation, smoke during acceleration, rough running, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and a hissing sound. These symptoms suggested a potential issue with the emissions control system, specifically pointing towards a defective EGR valve. The EGR valve malfunction can cause these problems, and a diagnostic check by a certified technician was recommended. The issue was confirmed to be the EGR valve, and after repair, the vehicle's performance improved.

Thanks for the reply! No recent maintenance, but is it possible it could be the EGR valve? I've read a bit about that, and it seems like some of the symptoms match. Is there any way to know for sure?

Ah, yes, you are quite right. The EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) being defective is a distinct possibility, given the symptoms described. A malfunctioning EGR valve can indeed cause reduced engine power, trigger the check engine light, produce smoke, result in rough engine running, increase fuel consumption, and lead to jerking during acceleration. The hissing sound could be related if the valve is stuck open or has a leak. While diagnosing without a hands-on inspection is difficult, the symptoms strongly align with a defective or jammed EGR valve. Considering the potential impact on emissions and engine performance, I would suggest having a certified technician perform a diagnostic check. You could also try an emissions test. It would be advisable to visit a trusted workshop to ascertain the precise nature of the issue and undertake the necessary repairs.

Thanks, I appreciate the detailed advice! I took it to a local garage, and you were right – it was the EGR valve. The total repair cost came to 355€. Runs much better now.

The symptoms you are experiencing with your Chevrolet Aveo do indeed suggest a serious issue. Loss of power, the check engine light, smoke during acceleration, rough running, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and a hissing sound collectively point towards a potential problem within the emissions control system or the engine's air intake. While a vacuum leak could contribute to some of these symptoms, the combination suggests a more specific culprit. Has the car undergone any recent maintenance or repairs that might be related? Have you noticed any changes in the car's performance leading up to these issues? I would further check the catalytic converter.
