Guys, I'm pulling my hair out! My 2014 Fiat Avventura (gasoline engine) is a nightmare. 74455 km on the clock. It refuses to start, especially when in park. The check engine light is mocking me, and the gearbox feels like it's stirring soup instead of shifting gears. Mechanics' gizmo is throwing some error. I'm fearing the worst... anyone experienced this?

Sounds rough. Does it happen in neutral too? Have you checked the gear linkage cable for any obvious damage or looseness? Could be a simple adjustment, but with those symptoms, it does point towards transmission issues.

Neutral is the same story, unfortunately. I haven't crawled under to check the linkage cable yet, but will do that tomorrow morning. What kind of transmission issues are we talking about? Should I be preparing my wallet for major surgery?

If it's doing it in both park and neutral and you're getting errors, plus slipping, then yeah, it's beyond a simple linkage adjustment. The 'affected control unit defective' error points to the control unit. Given the error and symptoms, the control unit is likely the culprit.
