My 2006 Toyota Aygo diesel is overheating and the check engine light is on. The radiator fan isn't working. Could a defective speed sensor be the cause?

Hey! Overheating and a check engine light, huh? Sounds familiar. I had a similar problem with my old Vauxhall Astra, though it was a petrol engine. The fan wasn't kicking in, and it turned out to be a faulty thermal switch. Have you checked that, or the fan motor itself? It could be a simple fix, or something more complex in the cooling system.

Thanks for the response. I appreciate the insight regarding the thermal switch and fan motor. Is the thermal switch difficult to access and test? I'm not particularly experienced with vehicle repairs, so I'm hesitant to begin without a clearer understanding of the process.

No worries! Honestly, it can be a bit fiddly depending on where it's located in your Aygo. Since you're not super experienced, and with the overheating issue, it might be best to get it checked out by a workshop. Don't want to risk causing more damage to the engine. They can properly diagnose if it's the thermal switch, the fan itself, or something else entirely.

Thanks again for the advice. I took your suggestion and brought the vehicle to a local workshop. It turned out that the speed sensor was indeed defective and was causing the radiator fan not to engage. The total repair cost was 250€.
