Berlingo belt tensioner issue

I'm having trouble with my 2018 Citroen Berlingo diesel. It's got about 82807 km on the clock. The belt-handover no longer works, and I suspect it's a bad belt tensioner, possibly the defective belt bringer/handover itself. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any ideas what could be causing this?

Summary of the thread

The 2018 Citroen Berlingo diesel with 82807 km had a belt tensioner issue, causing the belt-handover to malfunction and producing a squealing noise, especially when the engine was cold. The problem was suspected to be a defective belt tensioner or belt bringer/handover. The solution involved taking the vehicle to a workshop, where the belt tensioner was confirmed as the issue and subsequently replaced, resolving the noise and restoring smooth engine operation.

I had a similar issue with my Berlingo not too long ago. Belt squeal was driving me nuts, and the belt drive seemed off. Does it sound like a belt squeal, especially when the engine is cold? I had issues with my tensioner pulley and it impacted the engine performance because the serpentine belt wasn't doing its job. Can you tell me more about any noises you're hearing?

Yes, it does sound like a belt squeal, especially when starting up! How did you figure out it was the tensioner pulley? Was it difficult to diagnose?

Well, the squealing was the first clue. It got progressively worse, and then I started noticing a slight drop in performance. Given the mileage on my van and the symptoms, I strongly suspected the tensioner. Honestly, unless you're very comfortable working on engines, I'd recommend getting it checked out by a workshop. They'll be able to confirm the issue and give you a proper repair estimate. It's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the belt drive!

Thanks so much for the advice! I took it to a workshop, and you were right – it was the belt tensioner! They replaced it, and the total repair cost was 455€. The belt squeal is gone, and the engine is running smoothly again. Appreciate the help!
