Berlingo EGR Valve Issue

My 2013 Citroen Berlingo diesel (157338 km) seems to have a defective EGR valve. Symptoms: reduced engine power, check engine light, smoke during acceleration, rough running, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and a loud hissing noise when accelerating. Could the EGR valve be defective or jammed? Anyone experienced this?

Whoa, that sounds rough! I had similar symptoms on my old Volvo V70. Check engine light, rough idle, the whole shebang. Turned out to be a clogged EGR valve as well. Did you check the hoses? Any chance you've got a vacuum leak somewhere in the system? That could throw off the EGR's operation and cause some of those issues, you know, like the jerking and loss of power.

Thanks. I've inspected the hoses, and they appear intact. I also checked all the relevant electrical connections. Could you elaborate on the specifics of your Volvo repair?

Well, on my Volvo, the EGR valve was completely gunked up with carbon deposits. It wasn't sealing properly, which caused all sorts of problems with the air-fuel mixture. I tried cleaning it myself, but it didn't really solve the issue long-term. Eventually, I bit the bullet and had a new EGR valve installed, which fixed the problem completely. The hissing sounds like it could be a leak within the valve itself, I'd say you're probably going to need to go to a workshop.

I appreciate your insights. Based on your experience and the symptoms observed, I took it to a workshop. As suspected, they confirmed the EGR valve needed replacement. The total repair cost was 355€. Thanks for confirming my initial suspicion.
