Berlingo Gearbox Control Unit Failure

Help! My 2000 Citroen Berlingo (gasoline engine) is throwing a fit. The gear shift indicator in the speedometer is dead. It's not possible to engage the gears, shifting is totally implausible, and the gearbox slips like crazy. Plus, I hear grinding noises. Error memory is full! Mileage is 110052 km. Any ideas?

I've seen something similar on a Berlingo. A non-functional gear selection display, combined with shifting problems and stored error codes, often points to a problem with the control unit that manages the automatic transmission. This unit is responsible for interpreting sensor data related to gear selection and then displaying the correct gear on the instrument panel, and it also governs the shifting process within the gearbox itself. When this unit fails, you get all sorts of weird symptoms. Have you checked the wiring harness and connectors leading to the transmission control unit for any signs of damage or corrosion?

Wiring harness and connectors? Where exactly are those located? I'm not sure what that is exactly, could you give more detail on the location of the transmission control unit, as I'm only familiar with, say, changing a tire.

Certainly, I understand. The transmission control unit is typically situated near the transmission itself, often within the engine compartment but sometimes under the dashboard. Its precise location will depend on the specific vehicle configuration, so consulting your Berlingo's service manual would be helpful. The wiring harness is a bundle of wires encased in a protective sheath, and the connectors are the plugs that attach the harness to the control unit and other components. Given the complexity of the system and your familiarity with car maintenance, it might be prudent to consult with a qualified mechanic. These issues can be challenging to diagnose and resolve without specialized knowledge and equipment.

Thanks! I suspected it was something like that. After a visit to the shop, they confirmed the control unit was defective. Repair cost me around 1000€!
