Bipper VANOS Solenoid Issue

2013 Peugeot Bipper, diesel engine, 207486 km. Check engine light's on and fuel consumption's increased. Mechanic suspects a faulty inlet VANOS mechanic, maybe a camshaft solenoid valve defect or power issue. Anyone seen this?

I drive a Bipper too. Sounds like my VANOS solenoid problem last year. Any power loss, especially at lower RPMs? Checked for oil sludge buildup? That messed with my variable timing.

Power loss? Yeah, lag accelerating from a standstill. Oil sludge... haven't checked. Can I inspect that myself?

Power loss was my first sign. Sludge is tricky without tools. Based on my experience, the check engine light, and fuel consumption, I'd go to a workshop. Save a headache.
