Black smoke and loss of power in VW Polo petrol engine 2012: Questions about mixture control
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
The 2012 VW Polo petrol engine is experiencing black smoke from the exhaust, difficulty starting, a lit check engine light, jerking during acceleration, decreased performance, increased fuel consumption, and a foul exhaust smell. The owner suspects a problem with the mixture control, possibly being too rich. Another participant shared a similar experience with their VW Golf TDI, which was resolved by replacing the broken fuel injectors. It was suggested that the Polo's issues might also be due to the injection system. The owner was advised to take the car to a garage for professional assessment and repair.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! Interesting to see that you had similar problems with your Golf. Can someone remind me how much it cost you to change the injection system? And have you noticed anything else since then, or has your car been running like clockwork ever since? Have a nice day and thanks in advance!

Hey, no problem, I'm always happy to help! The fuel injection system was really a lot of money, it cost me around €250. That was specifically for the defective fuel pressure regulator. Since I went to the garage, the problem with the mixture control (mixture was too rich) has been solved. My Golf now runs like clockwork again, no more jerking or smoke. I'm sure your Polo will soon be fit again, hopefully without a hole in your wallet! Have a relaxing day everyone.

Hey, that's really good news that your Golf is running smoothly again. 250 sounds a lot, but when I consider that it can prevent serious damage to the engine, it seems worth it. I will definitely take it to a garage as soon as possible and hopefully they will get my Polo running again. Thanks again for your help and have a relaxing day too.

Hi Paule, it seems like you've replaced the lambda sensors but the problem persists. This could indicate a wiring issue. Check the wiring and connectors for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections. If everything looks fine, you might have a problem with the engine control module (ECM). However, diagnosing and repairing ECM issues should be done by a professional mechanic due to its complexity. Please let us know how it goes. Do you have any other questions?

Hi, the error code P2196 indicates that the oxygen sensor (Bank 1, Sensor 1) is detecting a consistently rich fuel mixture. Before replacing the sensor, check for vacuum leaks, a clogged air filter, or a faulty fuel injector, as these can also cause a rich condition. If these components are fine, then the sensor itself might be faulty. Let us know if you need further assistance or if you have any updates.

Hey, I had similar problems with my 2015 VW Golf TDI. In my case, it was the injection system that caused all the problems. I mean, imagine, the car jerked and smoked when accelerating, just like yours, and smelled really unpleasant. The check engine light was on and it took a long time to start. When I took it to the garage, they discovered that the fuel injectors were broken and needed replacing. That was a pretty serious problem because it can seriously damage the engine if you don't tackle it in time. In your case it could also be the injection system, especially if the mixture is too rich. Hope this helps you in some way. All the best with your Polo!
