Thanks for sharing your experience! My car has 76405 KM and was just serviced last month. I haven't noticed any coolant leaks underneath, but I haven't checked the coolant level yet, I'll do that as soon as I get home. The error code I'm getting is P0217, which from what I understand relates to engine overheating conditions. It's reassuring to hear your issue was just a wiring problem. Did you notice any performance issues before getting it fixed? I'm a bit nervous about driving it too much until I figure out what's wrong.

Hey again! Yeah, with that P0217 code, it's definitely different from what I dealt with. Mine had a P0118 code, which was specifically related to the sensor circuit. When I had my issue, I didn't notice any real performance problems, the car drove normally, which is why I was pretty sure it was just a sensor or wiring issue. But with your P0217, that's actually signaling real overheating, so I'd be more careful. Looking back, I should've asked about your temperature gauge readings. Is your temp gauge showing higher than normal? Since you mentioned your recent service, they should've checked the coolant level then, but definitely check it yourself. I wouldn't drive it much until you figure it out, overheating can cause serious engine damage. Trust me, my mechanic has shown me some pretty nasty examples of what can happen. Since your car was just serviced, maybe give them a call? They might have some insights since they recently worked on it. With my BMW, I've learned it's better to be safe than sorry, these engines are pretty sensitive to heat issues. Keep us posted on what you find with the coolant level check!

Thanks so much for the detailed response! You're absolutely right, I just checked and my temperature gauge is running higher than usual. I called the service center and they told me to bring it in right away. Better safe than sorry, especially with these engines. I'll avoid driving it and have it towed to the shop tomorrow morning. Really appreciate you pointing out the difference between your sensor issue and my potential overheating problem, might have saved me from some serious engine damage! I'll update the thread once I find out what's causing it. These BMWs are great cars but they sure keep us on our toes with maintenance! Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience and advice.

Hi there! I have some experience working on BMWs. Had a similar issue with my 2016 BMW 3 series (also gas engine). The symptoms were exactly like what you're describing. After taking it to my regular workshop, they found a faulty cable connection to the coolant temperature sensor. The repair was pretty straightforward, they replaced the wiring and connector, cost me around 95 Euro. Fixed the warning lights and the engine's been running perfectly since then. But before jumping to conclusions, could you share if you've noticed any coolant leaks or if your coolant levels are actually low? Also, what's the exact error code you're getting? This would help pinpoint whether you're dealing with the same issue I had. Just keep in mind that BMW models can have different configurations, so while our issues sound similar, getting those details would help me give you more specific advice.
