BMW 3-Series Running Rich: Help with Engine Power Loss

Hey all, need some help with my 2014 BMW 3 series. The engine's running really rough with reduced power, excessive fuel consumption, and jerks during acceleration. Check engine light is also on. I suspect the engine might be running too rich. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What did your mechanic find and how was it fixed? Want to get this sorted before it causes serious engine damage. Thanks!

Hey there! I've got some experience with cars, and I had a very similar issue with my 2016 BMW 5 series last year. The symptoms you're describing are exactly what I experienced, rough running, power loss, and that annoying jerking during acceleration. Turned out to be a faulty fuel injector. Had to take it to my trusted workshop, and they diagnosed it using their diagnostic tools. The fix wasn't cheap, set me back about 515 Euro, but it solved all those issues completely. The car's been running smoothly ever since. Before suggesting anything specific though, could you share: Current mileage? Any other warning lights? When was your last service? Does it happen more when the engine's cold or warm? This info would help determine if you're dealing with the same issue I had. Quick tip though, don't wait too long to get it checked out, as faulty injectors can cause more expensive problems if left unattended.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm currently at 84332 KM and just had my last service done. My situation sounds really similar to what you went through. The jerking and rough running happens pretty much all the time, but it's definitely worse when I first start up in the morning. No other warning lights besides the check engine light. I was worried it might be something major, but hearing about your injector issue gives me some hope that it might be something fixable without breaking the bank too badly. Guess I better get it to the shop soon before it turns into something worse. Thanks for the heads up about potential damage, definitely don't want to risk that!

Hey again! Really glad I could help with my previous response about the injector issue. After reading your details, I'm even more convinced we had the same problem. Those cold-start symptoms especially, that's exactly what I experienced with my 5 series. The timing's interesting too, my injector failed around 87000 KM, pretty close to where you are now. And just like yours, mine was recently serviced when it started acting up. These injectors seem to have a bit of a lifespan pattern, I've noticed. Quick follow-up from my experience, when I finally got it fixed, my mechanic showed me the old injector. It was pretty gunked up, which explained all those symptoms we both experienced. The difference in how my car ran before and after was like night and day. Fuel consumption dropped back to normal too, which was a nice bonus. Just a heads up, when you take it in, make sure they check all the injectors, not just the faulty one. I ended up replacing two because the second one was on its way out too. Saved me another trip to the shop a few months later. Keep me posted on what you find out. Always interested to hear if these BMW quirks follow the same patterns!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That's super helpful, especially about checking all the injectors. I've actually just booked an appointment with my mechanic for tomorrow morning, didn't want to risk waiting after what you said about potential damage. Really appreciate the tip about the mileage pattern too, makes total sense my injectors might be reaching their end of life around now. I'll make sure to ask them to inspect all the injectors while they're at it. Definitely worth spending a bit more now to avoid another repair bill in a few months! Actually feeling much better about this whole situation now. Will save me the stress of wondering if it's something way more serious. Just hoping my repair bill stays around what you paid, seems pretty reasonable for what needs doing. Thanks again for sharing your experience. It's been super reassuring to hear from someone who's been through the exact same thing. I'll keep you posted on what they find!
