BMW 4 Electrical Chaos: Purple Xenons & Error Messages

Having issues with my 2018 BMW 4 diesel. The speedometer is showing error messages, and I'm getting multiple lighting problems. The xenon lights are turning purple, and the turn signals are acting up. Several error codes are stored in the system. Has anyone dealt with similar lighting system failures? Interested in hearing about repair experiences and workshop solutions. Any help appreciated!

Hey there! I had similar issues with my 2020 BMW 5 Series diesel. I'm a hobby mechanic with some experience working on cars, particularly BMWs (also owned a 3 Series before). Those symptoms sound very familiar. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty wiring connection to the lighting control module. The workshop found corroded plug connections that were causing all sorts of weird electrical gremlins, purple xenons, speedometer errors, the works. The fix was straightforward but required proper diagnostic equipment. Cost me 95 Euro to get the cables and connections replaced. Since then, no more issues! Before I share more specific details, what's your exact engine variant and mileage? Also, have you noticed any other electrical quirks lately, like unusual warning lights on the dash? These details would help me give you more targeted advice based on my experience.

Hi, thanks for sharing your experience! My car has only 6224 KM on the clock and had its latest service done recently. Those symptoms are exactly what I'm dealing with, and it's good to hear there might be a straightforward fix. I'll definitely have the wiring connections checked out based on your experience. Did you notice if the problems got worse over time before you got it fixed? Just wondering if I should take it in right away or if I have some time to schedule the repair. Thanks again for the help!

Hey again! Yeah, with those symptoms on a relatively new car like yours, I wouldn't wait too long. In my case, the problems definitely got worse over time. It started with just occasional flickering of the xenon lights, but within about two weeks, I was getting all sorts of crazy electrical issues. What really made me take immediate action was when the purple tint in the xenons became more pronounced and the error messages started appearing more frequently. Trust me, you don't want to end up stuck somewhere with failing lights! My advice, based on what happened with my BMW, would be to get it checked out sooner rather than later. Those corroded connections won't fix themselves, and the longer you wait, the more issues might pop up. Plus, since your car is still fairly new, this could potentially be covered under warranty, definitely worth checking. The repair itself only took a couple of hours once they diagnosed the issue. Much better than dealing with a complete lighting system failure, which is what almost happened to me when I initially tried to wait it out! Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out. I'm curious if it's the same issue I had with mine.

Thanks so much for the detailed advice! You've convinced me, I'll book it in for next week rather than waiting. Better safe than sorry, especially with these electrical gremlins. And you're right about the warranty, just checked my paperwork and I should still be covered. Really appreciate you sharing your experience with the repair timeline. It's a relief knowing it's likely just a connection issue and not something more serious. I'll definitely update you once I get it sorted. Thanks again for taking the time to help out a fellow BMW owner with this headache!
