BMW 5 Hybrid Fan Failure Leads to Engine Overheating

Need advice: BMW 5 Hybrid (2020) cooling system problems My 2020 BMW 5 Hybrid (93k km) is having serious cooling issues. Engine keeps overheating and runs in limp mode. The electric fan seems to be the culprit, but I'm hesitant to visit the dealer after a previous bad experience. Has anyone dealt with similar cooling problems on their BMW 5 Series? Looking for recommendations on reliable repair options and potential costs. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Summary of the thread

A 2020 BMW 5 Hybrid experienced engine overheating and limp mode due to cooling system issues, suspected to be caused by a malfunctioning electric fan. A similar case with a BMW 3 Series Hybrid revealed that corroded wiring connectors between the control module and the fan assembly were the root cause, along with a small crack in a coolant hose. The recommended solution involved cleaning and replacing damaged wiring and addressing any coolant leaks. Following these repairs, the overheating issue was resolved, and the vehicle's performance returned to normal.

I had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW 3 Series Hybrid. The electric fan wasn't engaging properly due to a faulty connection between the control module and the fan assembly. Initially thought it was the fan itself, but turned out to be just corroded wiring connectors. Got it fixed at a garage last month. They had to clean the connections and replace some damaged wiring. The mechanic also mentioned finding a small crack in one of the coolant hoses, which was contributing to the problem. Not a major repair in the end, though the diagnostic process was quite thorough since they had to rule out other cooling system components. If you're experiencing the same symptoms I did (overheating and limp mode), I'd suggest getting it checked soon. These cooling issues can lead to more serious engine damage if left unattended. My car's been running perfectly since the repair. Hope this helps with your decision.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the cooling system issue. Sounds pretty similar to what I'm dealing with right now. Great to hear you got it sorted without any major headaches. Would you mind letting me know roughly how much the repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks popping up?

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up on your questions. Yes, everything's been running perfectly smooth since I had it fixed. The total bill came to 95 € for fixing the faulty cable connection to the electric fan, turned out to be exactly what I suspected with those corroded connectors. The mechanic did a thorough job cleaning everything up and replacing the damaged wiring. I'm pretty relieved it wasn't anything more serious. Haven't had a single problem with the cooling system since then, no more overheating, no more limp mode, nothing. The fan kicks in exactly when it should now. Honestly, for what could've been a much bigger headache, I'd say I got off pretty lucky with just needing those connections sorted. Just to give you some peace of mind, the temperature gauge has been rock solid ever since, and the car's performance is back to exactly how it should be. No other quirks or issues have shown up. If your symptoms are matching what I experienced, you're probably looking at a similar straightforward fix. Definitely worth getting it checked out sooner rather than later though, better safe than sorry with cooling issues!

Thanks for all the detailed info! I took your advice and got my car checked out at an independent mechanic who specializes in European cars. Just like your case, they found corroded wiring connections to the cooling fan. They also spotted a small leak in one of the coolant hoses that needed replacing. Total repair came to 150 €, a bit more than yours but still way better than what I was fearing. Got it all fixed yesterday and took it for a good test drive today. The engine temperature is staying perfectly stable now, and no more limp mode! Such a relief it wasn't anything major. The mechanic was really thorough and even showed me what was causing the problem. Feel much better about the whole situation now. Thanks again for helping me avoid what could've been a much bigger problem. Sometimes it's just good to hear from someone who's been through the same thing. Car's running like new again!
