Thanks for sharing your experience! My 5 series just hit 166495 KM at the last service, and I'm getting those generic "Communication Error" messages. Haven't had any battery issues, but I did recently update my phone. I tried the basic stuff like clearing the Bluetooth memory and doing a head unit reset, but no luck. Good to know it might just be a module re-pairing issue, that sounds way better than having to replace the whole unit. I'll definitely mention this to my mechanic when I take it in. Was the fix pretty quick for you?

Hey again! Yeah, the fix was super quick for my 7 Series, the whole thing took less than an hour. Those pesky "Communication Error" messages are exactly what I was getting too. Since you mentioned you've updated your phone, that's probably what triggered it, same thing happened to me after a major phone update. I remember the mechanic telling me these BMWs from our era can be a bit sensitive when it comes to software changes. The module re-pairing process is pretty straightforward for them if they know what they're doing. In my case, they had to use their diagnostic computer to completely clear the old Bluetooth data (way deeper than what we can do with the basic reset), then rebuild the connection from scratch. You've got about 15K more kilometers on yours than I had when this happened, but that shouldn't make any difference for this kind of issue. Since you've already tried the DIY fixes like clearing the memory and resetting, you're definitely on the right track for needing the professional reset I had done. Quick tip though, before you take it in, maybe try removing your phone from the car's memory AND remove the car from your phone's Bluetooth devices, then do a full power cycle on both. Sometimes that works, but if not, at least the repair shouldn't break the bank!

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! That's super helpful, especially the tip about removing the car from my phone's Bluetooth devices, hadn't thought of that actually. I'll give that power cycle trick a try tonight before booking the workshop appointment. Really relieved to hear it was such a quick fix for you and didn't cost much. These older BMWs can be money pits when things go wrong, so I was pretty worried at first! I've got a good mechanic who knows these cars well, so hopefully it'll be just as straightforward as your repair was. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, definitely feeling more confident about getting this sorted now!

Hey there! I had a similar problem with my 2012 BMW 7 Series diesel last year. I'm fairly experienced with basic car maintenance, but electronics aren't my strong suit. The symptoms were exactly like yours, Bluetooth going crazy, dropped connections, the whole nine yards. After trying the usual reset tricks, I took it to my regular workshop. Turned out the Bluetooth module needed to be re-paired with the car's system. The mechanic basically had to do a complete reset and reconfiguration of the infotainment system. Quick job, cost me about 45 Euro, and it's been working perfectly since. What specific error messages are you getting? Also, could you share if you've had any recent battery issues or if you've updated your phone lately? Might help pinpoint if it's the same problem I had.
