BMW 6 Active Hood Malfunction: Repair Tips & Costs
Summary of the thread
A 2016 BMW 6 is experiencing an active hood malfunction, with error messages and an airbag warning light. The issue may be due to a faulty acceleration sensor, as similar problems have been resolved by replacing this sensor and resetting the system. It's advised to ensure all connections are checked and properly seated to prevent recurring warnings. A diagnostic reset is necessary after the repair to clear error codes and recalibrate the system.

Thanks for the detailed response! Mine hasn't actually deployed, but I've got those pesky warning lights that won't go away. Last service was 2 months ago and I'm at 39306 KM, so it's definitely not a maintenance-related issue. No accidents or impacts either, it just started showing up out of nowhere last week. Good to know about the acceleration sensor, that repair cost sounds way better than what I was worried about. Did you have to reset the system after the sensor replacement? Just wondering what I should expect when I take it in.

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, it sounds pretty similar to what I experienced with my BMW. Mine also started showing those warnings out of nowhere, and I was at around 45000 KM when it happened. To answer your question, yes, they had to reset the entire system after replacing the sensor. The workshop did a complete diagnostic reset to clear all the error codes and recalibrate the new sensor. It took them about 2-3 hours total for the whole job. One thing I learned though, make sure they check all the connections too. After my first repair, the warning came back briefly because one of the connectors wasn't properly seated. They fixed it under warranty, but it's worth mentioning to them to double-check everything. Since you mentioned no accidents and it being a unusual occurrence, it's probably the same sensor issue I had. These active hood systems are pretty sensitive, sometimes they can trigger false readings even from normal wear and tear. Keep us posted on what your workshop finds. Always good to know if there might be other causes we should watch out for with these models.

Thanks so much for all this info! Really helpful to know about the connector issue too, I'll definitely mention that when I take it in. Good to hear it's likely just a sensor problem and not something more serious. I was worried it might be a much bigger repair job. I've scheduled an appointment for next week, and I'll make sure they do a thorough check of all the connections like you suggested. That's a smart tip about the diagnostic reset too, I'll ask them to verify everything's properly recalibrated after the repair. I'll definitely update this thread once I get it fixed. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, makes me feel a lot better about dealing with this!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and had a similar issue with my 2014 BMW 5 Series. I also own a 3 Series, so I'm quite familiar with BMW electronics. When my active hood sensors malfunctioned, I got those same warning lights you're describing. Took it to my workshop and they diagnosed a faulty acceleration sensor, it was triggering the system incorrectly. The whole repair including parts and labor cost me around 315 Euro. Before I can give more specific advice, could you share: Has the hood actually deployed? Are there any other warning lights besides the airbag? Have you had any recent front-end impacts, even minor ones? Let me know these details and I can share more about how my repair went down.
