BMW 6 Diesel Rough Idle and Power Loss, FPR Issue?

I have a 2009 BMW 6 diesel that's giving me trouble. The engine idles rough with speed fluctuations and sometimes stalls. When driving, power is reduced and throttle response is poor. The check engine light is also on. I suspect the fuel pressure regulator might be bad. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and how did your mechanic resolve it? Looking to hear about repair experiences before taking it to the workshop.

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and I actually faced something very similar with my 2011 BMW 5 series diesel (had a who owned a 7 series too). After changing the fuel filter, I had pretty much the same symptoms, rough idle, stalling, and reduced power. Turned out it wasn't properly bled after the filter change, causing air in the fuel system. My trusted mechanic fixed it by properly bleeding the system and clearing the error codes. Only cost me 45 Euro and the car's been running smoothly since. Could you share more details about when these issues started? Did you recently have any work done on the fuel system? Also, have you scanned for error codes? This info would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience.

Thanks for sharing that! You know what, I'm dealing with those exact symptoms in my 6 series too (146001 KM on the clock). Actually, I did have the fuel filter replaced during my last service. Now that you mention the bleeding issue, it makes a lot of sense, my problems started right after that service. I'll definitely get it checked out for air in the system. Really helpful to hear about your experience, was starting to worry it might be something major. I've got the error codes saved on my phone, let me know if you'd like me to share them.

Hey again! Yeah, that timing definitely points to the bleeding issue, exactly like what I experienced. With both our cars being similar BMWs, these diesel engines are pretty sensitive to air in the fuel system. When my 5 series had this problem, my mechanic showed me how even a tiny air bubble can cause all those symptoms you're describing. Since you've got similar mileage to what mine had (mine was around 150K when this happened), I'm even more convinced it's the same issue. Would definitely help if you could share those error codes, when my car acted up, I remember getting P0087 and P0088 codes, which were related to the fuel rail pressure being too low/high. Just a heads up, in my case, after the proper bleeding, it took about 10-15 minutes of running the engine for everything to smooth out completely. Don't worry if it doesn't fix instantly. Let me know how it goes or if you need any other info about what happened with mine. Always happy to help another BMW owner avoid unnecessary stress and repairs!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! You've totally put my mind at ease. I just checked my codes and yep, got P0087 showing up, exactly like yours did. It's such a relief to hear this is likely just a bleeding issue and not something more serious. I was worried I'd need to replace expensive parts! I've booked it in for tomorrow morning at my local shop. I'll make sure to mention your experience with the bleeding procedure and that it might need some running time to sort itself out completely. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain everything, especially about those air bubbles causing all this trouble. I'll probably be kicking myself for not asking about this sooner, could've saved myself a week of worrying! I'll let you know how it turns out, but feeling much more confident now about the whole situation.
