BMW 7 Hybrid Jerking: Power Loss & Error Code Issues
Summary of the thread
A 2019 BMW 7 Hybrid is experiencing engine jerking and power loss, with error codes indicating issues with the hybrid system. The problem occurs mainly during transitions between electric and combustion modes. A similar case involved a faulty hybrid control module sensor, which required dealer diagnostics and repair. The suggested solution is to check the error codes and consult a dealer, as regular mechanics may lack the necessary tools for hybrid systems.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My situation seems a bit different though, as I haven't done any modifications to my car. The symptoms started after my last service at 154841 KM. One thing I noticed is that it mainly happens when the car switches between electric and combustion modes. I'll try to grab those error codes from my OBD reader tonight. Has anyone else dealt with hybrid transition issues? Not too keen on heading to the dealer if I can help it, given their steep rates.

Hey again! Since you mentioned it happens during the transition between electric and combustion modes, this rings a bell. Actually had this exact issue with my BMW 5 Series Hybrid last year, and it definitely wasn't related to the chip tuning incident I mentioned before. In my case, it turned out to be the hybrid control module acting up. The transitions became really rough, and the car would jerk especially when switching power sources. At first, I also tried avoiding the dealer, took it to my regular mechanic, but they couldn't properly diagnose it because they didn't have the specific diagnostic tools for the hybrid system. Finally bit the bullet and went to the dealer. They found that one of the sensors monitoring the hybrid system was faulty, causing confusion in the transition phase. It wasn't cheap, set me back about 800 bucks including diagnostics and parts, but it fixed the issue completely. Before you do anything though, definitely check those error codes. There's a chance it could be something simpler. When you get the codes, let me know, I kept all my repair documents and might be able to help if it's similar to what I experienced. These hybrid systems can be tricky, but they're usually pretty reliable once properly sorted.

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation! That actually sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. Just checked the error codes with my OBD reader, got P0A7F and P0A9C, which apparently relate to the hybrid system control module, just like you mentioned. Really appreciate you sharing the cost info too, at least now I know what I might be in for. Still not thrilled about that 800 price tag, but I guess there's no way around it if it's a hybrid control module issue. You're right about these systems being complicated. Guess I'll have to schedule that dealer appointment after all. Maybe I can negotiate a bit since I'm still somewhat close to the warranty period. Really glad I asked here first instead of potentially wasting time with regular mechanics who might not have the right diagnostic tools. You've saved me a lot of hassle! I'll update the thread once I get it sorted, might help others with similar issues.

Hey there! I have some experience with BMWs and had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW 5 Series Hybrid (also own a BMW X3). Had the exact same symptoms, jerking engine and power loss. Turned out I had gotten chip tuning done at a third-party shop trying to boost performance. Big mistake! The unauthorized modification messed with the engine management system. Took it to my trusted workshop, and they had to reset the ECU and restore factory settings. The whole thing cost me around 180 Euro, but it was worth it, car's running smoothly now. Can you share more details about your car? Like when did these symptoms start, and have you had any recent modifications done? Also, what error codes are you getting? This would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience. Pro tip: Always stick to authorized dealers for any engine management tweaks. Learned this the hard way!
