BMW 7 Series Diesel Misfire: Reset Quantity Drift Fix

Hi all! Having some serious concerns with my 2003 BMW 7 diesel (48,993 KM). Engine's running pretty rough lately and keeps misfiring while driving. Check engine light's on, and the diagnostic scan points to a Reset Quantity Drift Compensation issue. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their BMW 7? What was the actual problem and where did you get it fixed? Any tips would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2006 BMW 5 Series diesel last summer. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced, rough running, misfiring, and that annoying check engine light. Had it checked out and it turned out to be a faulty injector. These symptoms are pretty serious and shouldn't be ignored because bad injectors can cause more engine damage if left unchecked. Mine was leaking and causing uneven fuel distribution. The repair involved replacing two injectors that were shot. The mechanic also had to recalibrate the injection system to ensure proper fuel delivery. It's definitely not a DIY job, needs specialized diagnostic equipment and coding. Wouldn't call it a quick fix, took about two days at the shop. But once it was done, the difference was like night and day, smooth running engine, no more misfires, and that check engine light finally went off. If your diagnostic is showing Reset Quantity Drift Compensation, it's almost certainly injector-related. Best to get it sorted soon before it causes more problems.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Had exactly the same symptoms with my beemer and it was indeed the injectors causing all the trouble. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the fix? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the repair, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?

Hey again! Just saw your follow-up, glad to hear you tracked down the same issue! Yeah, the repair set me back 515 € for fixing the faulty injector, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The Reset Quantity Drift Compensation problem got completely sorted out, and my car's been running like a dream ever since. Haven't had a single problem since the fix, the engine's super smooth now, no more misfires or warning lights. Seriously, it's like driving a different car! Been about 8 months since the repair, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Just make sure you get a proper diagnosis and stick to certified mechanics who know their way around BMWs. These engines are pretty sophisticated, and you want someone who knows what they're doing when it comes to injector work. Let me know how yours turns out after the repair!

Thanks so much for the info! Just wanted to update you, I bit the bullet and took my car to a certified BMW specialist last week. You were spot on about the injector issue. Ended up costing me about 600 € for the whole job, but like you said, totally worth it. The mechanic I found was actually great, really knew his stuff and walked me through everything they were doing. They had to keep the car for three days, but the work was thorough. Had them do a full diagnostic scan while they were at it, just to be safe. Car's running beautifully now, no more rough starts or misfires, and that pesky check engine light is finally gone! Feels like I'm driving a new car. Definitely learned my lesson about not waiting too long when these issues pop up. Thanks again for helping me figure this out!
