BMW 8 Diesel Error Codes: Troubleshooting Display Issues

Hi all, my 2019 BMW 8 Diesel has been acting up lately. Getting error messages in the speedometer display and fault codes stored in memory. I suspect it's related to an incomplete system readiness check, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what exactly your workshop did to resolve it. Thanks in advance.

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs. Actually, I had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW 6 Series diesel last month. The error messages and fault codes were quite similar to what you're describing. In my case, my regular workshop checked it via OBD2 scanner and cleared the codes at no cost since I'm a regular customer. After clearing them, everything went back to normal. It turned out to be just some stored error codes from a previous diagnostic reading that weren't properly cleared. Could you share what specific error messages you're seeing on the display? Also, do you know what fault codes are stored? This would help me give you more targeted advice based on my experience with these models.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is currently at 156815 KM and I just got it serviced last month. The error messages are mostly related to the engine management system, getting "Check Control Message" and "Engine Malfunction" warnings. Unfortunately, I don't have the exact fault codes on hand since they keep changing. I'm a bit hesitant about just clearing the codes without finding the root cause though. Did you experience any issues after clearing yours? The car runs fine most of the time but these warnings are making me nervous about potential bigger problems developing.

Hey again! Thanks for providing those details. I totally get your concern about just clearing the codes, I actually had the same hesitation with my BMW 6 Series when this happened. Since you mentioned the "Engine Malfunction" and "Check Control Message" warnings, this sounds really familiar. After my initial reply to you, I actually had the warnings pop up again about two weeks after clearing them the first time. Turned out there was a bit more to it than just stored codes in my case. My mechanic did a deeper dive and found that the issue was related to the engine control module sensors. There was some carbon buildup affecting the readings, which kept triggering those inconsistent fault codes. Had them clean the sensors and haven't seen those warnings since, it's been about 6 months now. Given that you just had a service last month, maybe check if they did any sensor cleaning or diagnostics? With our diesel engines, these sensors can be pretty sensitive to buildup. If they didn't check this specifically, might be worth having them take a look. Better safe than sorry, especially since you're getting multiple warnings. Want to know if you've noticed any changes in how the car drives when these warnings appear? Like any rough idling or drop in power? This might help narrow down if it's a similar sensor issue to what I experienced.

Thanks for that detailed follow-up! Actually, now that you mention it, I have noticed some slight roughness in the idle when the warnings pop up, especially when the engine is cold in the morning. It's not super obvious, but definitely there. I just called my service center and checked, they didn't do any specific sensor cleaning during the last service. It was just the usual oil change and basic maintenance stuff. I think I'll take it back and have them look specifically at those sensors you mentioned. Rather get it sorted now than wait for bigger issues. Really appreciate you sharing your experience with the sensor cleaning fix. Makes me feel better knowing there might be a straightforward solution. I'll update you once I get it checked out. Thanks again for taking the time to help me understand what might be going on with my 8 Series!
