BMW Diesel Fan Failure Causing Dangerous Overheating

Hi all, having trouble with my '03 BMW 6 diesel. Engine's overheating and the radiator fan stays dead even when temps are high. Check engine light is also on. Pretty sure the fan is the culprit, but wanted to hear from others who've dealt with this. Has anyone experienced similar issues? What did your mechanic diagnose and how was it fixed? Any input would help.

Summary of the thread

The conversation centers around an overheating issue with a 2003 BMW 6 diesel, where the radiator fan is not functioning, and the check engine light is on. The problem could be due to a faulty fan, a speed sensor issue, or other electrical faults. Suggested solutions include checking error codes, inspecting the fan for stiffness, and consulting a mechanic to prevent further damage. The car owner plans to have the vehicle checked by a professional to diagnose and resolve the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Thanks for your reply! My last service was about 3 months ago at 181385 KM. I've checked both the coolant and fuse, they seem fine. Haven't pulled the error codes yet, but planning to get that done tomorrow. The temperature gauge starts climbing pretty quickly after startup, and I've noticed the engine running a bit rough lately too. Good point about the speed sensor, didn't consider that. Will definitely get the codes checked and report back. Really appreciate the detailed input!

Thanks so much for all this detailed advice! You're definitely right about not driving it too much, I've already called my regular mechanic and booked it in for tomorrow morning. Better safe than sorry! The similarities between your experience and mine are pretty striking, especially the rough running. I just went out and tried spinning the fan by hand like you suggested, it moves, but feels a bit stiff compared to what I remember from previous checks. Really glad you mentioned the towing situation, I'll definitely keep the car parked until I get it to the shop. I've also got a who can give me a lift tomorrow, so no worries there. I'll definitely update the thread once I get those codes read and hear what the mechanic says. Thanks again for taking the time to help out with all this info, it's super helpful having someone who's been through the same thing!
