BMW i3 Engine Mount Issues, Seeking Fellow Owner Advice

Hi all! My 2013 BMW i3 Hybrid (44,954 KM) has been acting up lately. The engine's vibrating more than usual, throwing an error code, and running rough at idle. I think it might be a faulty engine mount. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their i3? Would love to hear about your experiences and any trusted mechanics you'd recommend. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I drive a 2016 BMW i8 Hybrid and had very similar symptoms last year around 50K km. Initially thought it was the engine mount too, but turned out to be a loose connection in the hybrid system's main cable harness. The symptoms were identical, rough idle, vibrations, and error codes. My car was at the garage for about two days. The tech had to remove several components to access and inspect the wiring. Found corrosion on one of the main connector pins, which was causing intermittent connection issues. They cleaned the connector, applied dielectric grease, and properly secured all the cables. It was a relatively serious issue since it affected the hybrid system's overall performance and could've led to bigger problems if left unchecked. After the fix, the vibrations disappeared completely and the error codes cleared up. Based on your symptoms, I'd recommend getting it checked soon. These hybrid systems are pretty complex and what seems like a simple vibration could be hiding a bigger electrical issue. Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the cable harness issue. Sounds like I might be dealing with something similar. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? Also, have you had any other issues pop up since they fixed it? Really trying to get a handle on what I might be looking at cost-wise, and it'd be great to know if this solved things for good.

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, I actually did end up taking my i8 to a mechanic after our last chat, and here's the funny thing: while I initially had that cable harness issue I mentioned, this time it really was the engine mount! They found it was definitely worn out and causing all those vibrations. The repair was pretty straightforward, cost me 95€ for fixing the cable/plug connection issue they found along the way. Money well spent if you ask me. The car's running smooth as silk now, no vibrations whatsoever. I've put about 3,000 km on it since the fix, and honestly, it feels like a different car. Haven't had a single problem since then, no error codes, no weird noises, nothing. It's amazing what a difference fixing that mount made. The mechanic also gave everything a good once-over while they were at it, so that was reassuring. Based on my experience, I'd say go for it and get yours checked out. The peace of mind is worth it, and it might save you from bigger headaches down the road. Let me know how it goes if you decide to get it looked at!

Just wanted to update everyone, I took my i3 to a new mechanic yesterday, and wow, what a different experience! The issue turned out to be both a worn engine mount and some corroded wiring connections, pretty much exactly what you described. The repair took about three hours. They fixed the mount, cleaned up all the connections, and even gave the hybrid system a thorough check. Cost me around 800 for everything, including parts and labor. Honestly, it was worth every penny. The difference is night and day! No more weird vibrations, the error code's gone, and the engine runs super smooth now. The mechanic walked me through everything they did and even showed me the old parts. Such a relief to finally have this sorted. Thanks again for pushing me to get it checked out. Sometimes you just need that extra nudge to make the right call. Fingers crossed this'll be the last repair for a while!
