BMW i3 Fuel System Issues Causing Power Loss and Stalls

BMW i3 2013, Engine trouble, potentially bad fuel pressure regulator? Hey everyone! My i3 hybrid (5048 km) has been acting up lately. The engine light is on, and I'm experiencing power loss with unstable idling. Sometimes it even stalls. Last mechanic visit wasn't great, so I'm looking for a second opinion. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? I suspect it might be the fuel pressure regulator. If you've had this fixed, how much did it cost and would you recommend your mechanic? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey there! I had similar issues with my BMW i8 2016 Hybrid last winter. After changing the fuel filter, I got error codes related to fuel pressure. The symptoms matched yours, power loss, rough idle, and occasional stalls. Initially thought it was just the filter adjustment, but turned out the fuel pressure regulator was actually failing. The pressure readings were way off spec. Had it fixed at my local BMW specialist, it was a serious job that required clearing multiple error codes and replacing the regulator unit. The interesting part is that these symptoms often show up after filter changes because the new filter reveals the underlying pressure regulation problems that were masked by the old clogged one. Just to add, get it checked soon. Driving with incorrect fuel pressure can damage other components in the fuel delivery system. Best of luck with the repair.

Hey again! Thanks so much for sharing your experience! Sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with right now. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much the whole repair set you back? And has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Really appreciate your help with this! Cheers

Hey! Glad to give you a quick update on my case! After getting the fuel pressure regulator fixed, my i8 has been running like a dream. The total bill came to just 45 € for fixing the error entry after the fuel filter change, way less painful than I expected! The best part? No more issues since then. The engine's running super smooth, no more power loss, and that annoying stalling is completely gone. It's like having a completely different car now, in a good way! Just make sure you get it sorted soon. I was lucky my repair costs were minimal, but leaving it too long could lead to bigger problems down the line. Trust me, you don't want to mess around with fuel system issues. Let me know how it goes with yours! Always happy to help a fellow BMW owner out. Cheers!

Just wanted to give you all an update! Finally got my i3 checked out by a new mechanic yesterday. You were spot on, it was indeed the fuel pressure regulator causing all the trouble. The repair was pretty straightforward and cost me a bit more than yours, around 75 bucks including labor. The mechanic actually showed me the old regulator, and it was definitely worn out. Since the fix, my car's running perfectly, no more stalling or power issues. The engine light's finally off, and the idle is smooth as butter. Thanks again for your help! Really saved me from stressing out too much about it. Definitely learned my lesson about getting these things checked out quickly before they turn into bigger problems. Take care!

Hi, my 2013 BMW X3 i28 occassionally has a fuel system failure light come on. The message says your fuel is low, maintain car at moderate speed. I then accelerate and within 100 meters i lose 100% of power and the car drifts to a halt. What is the issue?

Start by checking the fuel level to ensure it's not actually low, as a faulty fuel gauge could be misleading. If the fuel level is adequate, inspect the fuel pump and fuel filter for any blockages or failures, as these could cause the symptoms you're experiencing. If the issue persists, it might be wise to have a professional diagnose the fuel system to prevent potential safety hazards. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!
