BMW i3 Hybrid Stalling and Jerking: Valvetronic Issue?

Hi all! My 2017 BMW i3 Hybrid (193k km) has been acting up lately. The engine runs rough with delayed acceleration, jerks when I hit the gas, and burns more fuel than usual. The check engine light is also on. Previous mechanic experience wasn't great, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? I suspect it might be Valvetronic-related. Looking for recommendations on reliable mechanics who really know their way around BMW i3s and hybrid systems. Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey there! I had nearly identical issues with my 2020 BMW i8 Hybrid at 175k km. The symptoms you're describing match what I experienced, rough running, hesitation, increased fuel consumption, and that dreaded check engine light. Turned out my Valvetronic mechanism needed a complete run-in procedure and some parts replacement. The eccentric shaft sensor was shot, and the entire mechanism wasn't adjusting valve lift properly. This was causing the engine to run inefficiently and struggle with power delivery. This isn't a simple fix, it requires specialized diagnostic equipment and expertise with BMW's hybrid systems. It was a serious issue that could've led to more engine damage if left unattended. The repair involved removing several components to access the Valvetronic system. My advice? Don't put this off. Find a certified BMW specialist who has experience with hybrid systems. This isn't something for a general mechanic to tackle.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Mark. It's a huge relief to hear someone else went through the same thing with their BMW hybrid. The symptoms match exactly what I'm dealing with right now. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the Valvetronic repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Really appreciate the detailed insight about the eccentric shaft sensor. I'll definitely look for a certified specialist rather than risking it with a general mechanic. Cheers

Hey again! Great to hear back from you! Yes, I actually just got my i8 back from the mechanic last week, perfect timing to answer your questions. The total bill came to 575 € for fixing the Valvetronic mechanism, and honestly, it was worth every penny. Since the repair, it's like I'm driving a completely different car, in the best way possible! The engine runs super smooth now, no more jerking or hesitation when I accelerate, and my fuel consumption is back to normal. The check engine light hasn't made a reappearance either, which is always a good sign. Haven't noticed any other issues since the fix. The specialist did a thorough job with the Valvetronic run-in procedure and replaced the defective parts. My mechanic mentioned these issues are pretty common in BMW hybrids once they hit higher mileage, so you're definitely not alone. Just make sure you find someone who really knows their stuff with BMW hybrids, it makes all the difference. Let me know how it goes with yours!

Thanks for the follow-up! I actually just had my i3 fixed yesterday, and I wanted to share my experience. Found a certified BMW specialist who diagnosed the same Valvetronic issue you mentioned. The repair cost was a bit higher at 650€, but like you said, totally worth it. The mechanic was super professional and walked me through everything they were doing. The difference is night and day! My car's running like new again, no more sluggish acceleration or rough idling. Fuel economy has improved dramatically too. The mechanic even showed me the worn-out parts they replaced, which helped me understand what went wrong. Really grateful for your advice about going to a specialist. They caught a couple of minor issues during the inspection that could've become problems later. Think I've finally found a trustworthy mechanic for future maintenance. Thanks again for helping me out!
