BMW i4 Headlight Warning: Faulty Range Control System?

Hi all! I'm having trouble with my 2021 BMW 4 Electric. The warning light in the speedometer is on, error codes are stored, and the low beam headlights are misaligned (pointing too high/low). I suspect it's related to the headlight range control system. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would like to hear about your repair experiences and what the workshop did to fix it. Any insights would be helpful before I take it in.

Summary of the thread

A 2021 BMW i4 owner is experiencing a headlight warning light, stored error codes, and misaligned low beam headlights, suspecting a faulty headlight range control system. A similar issue was resolved by replacing a faulty servomotor in the headlight adjustment system, a common problem in these models after high mileage. The suggested solution includes checking both servomotors and wiring harness connections for corrosion, especially since the issue began suddenly after a recent service.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! I had a very similar issue with my 2019 BMW i4 (also own a BMW iX). I have some experience working on cars, but electrical problems are definitely not my strong suit. My car showed the same symptoms, warning light and misaligned headlights. Took it to my trusted workshop and they diagnosed a faulty servomotor in the headlight adjustment system. The repair set me back around 1040 Euro, but it fixed the problem completely. They had to replace the entire servomotor unit. Before offering more specific advice, could you share: Have you scanned for exact error codes? Is it affecting both headlights or just one side? Did this start suddenly or develop gradually? This info would help me understand if you're dealing with the exact same issue I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I have the same model year but with 187424 KM on the clock. Haven't scanned it for codes yet, but your servomotor issue sounds very similar to what I'm experiencing. It's affecting both headlights and started about a week ago. Mine actually began quite suddenly, noticed it right after my last service. Definitely going to have it checked out by a professional now that you've mentioned the servomotor. Really appreciate the heads up about the potential repair costs too!

Hey again! Thanks for the additional details about your BMW i4. Yeah, those symptoms are exactly like what I experienced, especially since it's affecting both headlights and came on suddenly. Since you mentioned it started right after your service, you might want to ask if they did any work near the headlight system during maintenance. In my case, I initially thought maybe they just needed a basic realignment, but the warning light was the real red flag that pointed to something more serious. The servomotor failure is actually more common than you'd think on these models, the workshop told me they see it quite regularly after about 150,000 KM. Quick tip from my experience: while you're at it, have them check the wiring harness connections too. When they fixed mine, they found some slight corrosion on the connectors that could have eventually caused problems. They cleaned those up as part of the repair. Oh, and here's something interesting, if your mileage is already at 187K, you might want to consider replacing both servomotors even if only one is faulty. Mine failed on the other side about 6 months after the first repair, so I ended up paying for labor twice. Wish I'd just done both at once! Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out. Always curious to hear if others have the same repair experience I did with these models.

Thanks so much for all this detailed advice! I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and those extra tips. It's actually a relief to hear this is a known issue with these models, I was worried it might be something more obscure and expensive. That's a great suggestion about checking both servomotors at once. Given my high mileage, I think I'll definitely follow your advice and replace both sides if needed. Don't want to deal with another repair in six months! I'll schedule an appointment with the workshop tomorrow and specifically mention the servomotor issue and ask them to check those wiring harness connections you mentioned. Also going to bring up the timing of this problem starting after my last service, maybe there's a connection there. Will definitely keep you posted on what they find. Really helpful to go in armed with this information instead of completely in the dark about what to expect. Thanks again for sharing your experience!
