BMW i4 Lighting System Failure, Switch or Something Else?

Hi everyone! Having trouble with my 2022 BMW i4. The entire lighting system is acting up, can't control any lights, low beam stays on permanently, and there's a fault code for the lighting system. I suspect the light switch might be faulty, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar lighting issues on their i4? Would love to hear how your repair went and what exactly needed fixing. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I actually have some experience with EVs and had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW iX3 last year. I'm not a pro mechanic but I've worked on cars as a hobby for a few years. My lighting system went crazy too, sounds exactly like what you're describing. Turned out it was just a loose connection in the main lighting control module wiring harness. Got it fixed at my regular workshop, they found the faulty plug connector and had to replace a few cables. Whole thing cost me 95 Euro and took about an hour. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share what fault code you're getting? Also, when exactly did this start happening? Did you notice anything unusual before the lights started acting up? PS: My cousin has an i4 too, great car choice!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's showing fault code 5DC892, and this started happening right after my last service at 170808 KM. Yeah, I noticed the lights flickering a bit before the whole system went haywire. Interesting that your iX3 had a similar issue, makes me feel better knowing it might just be a wiring problem. I'll get it checked out at the workshop. Thanks for the tip about the connectors, I'll make sure to mention that to the mechanic when I take it in.

Hey again! Yeah, that fault code and the flickering you mentioned definitely sounds similar to what I experienced with my iX3. After you mentioned the timing, right after a service, it actually reminded me of something. In my case, the techs had to remove some components near the lighting control module during routine maintenance, and they probably didn't secure one of the connectors properly when putting everything back together. The flickering is usually a dead giveaway for a loose connection or wiring issue. When I had it, it started with occasional flickering, then progressed to the permanent low beam and no control situation, exactly like what you're describing. Since it started right after your service, I'd actually go back to the same place and have them check it out. They might even fix it for free since it could be related to their previous work. Just make sure they thoroughly check all the connections around the lighting control module, that's the most likely culprit based on my experience. The good news is that it's probably not the light switch itself, which would be more expensive to replace. Let me know how it goes, I'm curious if it turns out to be the same issue as mine!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! I'll definitely head back to the service center tomorrow and explain what's going on. Really hoping you're right about it being just a loose connection from the last service, would be great if they could sort it under warranty. It's super helpful knowing exactly what to ask them to check, especially around that lighting control module. The flickering progression being so similar to your experience makes me pretty confident that's the issue. I'll keep an eye on the thread and update once I get it sorted. Thanks again for taking the time to help out, the BMW EV community is awesome!
