BMW i5 Climate Control Nightmare: Dead AC and Error Codes

Having issues with my 2024 BMW i5 climate control. AC doesn't cool, rear climate controls are dead, and the car shows climate-related error codes. Think it might be the rear ventilation flap. Has anyone dealt with this before? What was the repair process like and how did your workshop handle it? Could use some real-world experiences to understand what I'm dealing with.

Summary of the thread

The 2024 BMW i5 is experiencing climate control issues, including a non-functional AC, dead rear controls, and error codes. The problem might be due to a loose cable connection to the climate control module, as similar symptoms were resolved by securing cables in another BMW model. A software update was considered but not necessary in that case. The presence of clicking sounds when adjusting temperature settings further suggests a connection issue rather than a ventilation flap problem. Seeking a workshop with specific BMW EV experience is recommended for a straightforward and cost-effective fix.

Hi there! I have some experience with EVs and had a similar issue with my 2022 BMW i4 (also happened to my 's iX). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I faced, AC problems and dead climate controls. Took it to my regular workshop and they found a loose cable connection to the climate control module. The repair was pretty straightforward, they had to reconnect and secure the cables properly. Cost me 95 Euro and fixed all the issues, including those error codes. Could you share more details about the error codes you're seeing? Also, when did you first notice the problem, and does it happen all the time or intermittently? This info would help me better understand if you're dealing with the same issue I had.

I have been monitoring this closely since my last service. Mine has 64144 KM on the clock, and it's showing similar patterns to what you described. The error codes pop up out of nowhere, but the cooling issue is constant. It started about two weeks ago, first with just weak airflow, then the rear controls stopped working completely. Did your shop mention anything about the system needing a software update? My concern is that with these being new models, some workshops might not be fully up to speed with all the electric components. Thanks for sharing your experience, it's helpful to know I'm not alone with these climate control quirks.

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, those mileage numbers and symptoms sound really familiar. When mine acted up, it had around 58,000 KM, so we're in the same ballpark. You know what's interesting, my shop actually did mention software updates, but in my case, it turned out to be purely hardware-related with those loose connections. Though they did run a diagnostic update after the repair just to be safe. I totally get your concern about workshops and EVs. I was worried about the same thing. That's actually why I ended up making some calls and finding a shop that had specific experience with BMW EVs. The tech who worked on mine mentioned they'd seen this exact issue a few times before. Quick question, have you noticed any clicking sounds from behind the dash when you change temperature settings? That was something I experienced just before the system went completely wonky. If you're hearing that, it's another sign pointing to the connection issue rather than the flap problem you initially suspected. And honestly, based on what you're describing, it sounds identical to what I dealt with. The progression from weak airflow to complete rear control failure matches my experience exactly. I'd bet you're looking at the same fix I needed, especially given the similar error pattern.

Thanks so much for all this detail, it's really put my mind at ease! And yes, now that you mention it, I have been hearing those clicking sounds when adjusting the temperature. I didn't think much of it at first, but it makes total sense now. I'll definitely look for a workshop with specific BMW EV experience. The connection issue seems way more likely than my initial ventilation flap theory, especially since our cases are so similar. It's actually a relief to hear it might be something relatively simple and not too expensive to fix. I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I've made notes of everything you've mentioned and will bring these points up when I take it in. It's super helpful to go in armed with this kind of information rather than just hoping for the best!
