BMW i8 AC System Dead, Compressor Issues & Error Codes

Hey everyone! I'm having trouble with my 2016 BMW i8. The A/C system isn't working at all, won't turn on and obviously no cooling. The car's showing some error codes too. I suspect it might be related to the A/C compressor shutdown, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar A/C issues on their i8? Would really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the workshop did to fix it. What was the actual problem in your case?

Hey there! I have some experience working with hybrid cars and went through something very similar with my 2014 BMW i3. I feel your pain with the A/C troubles! Had the exact same symptoms, no A/C, error codes, the whole deal. Turned out there was an undervoltage issue affecting the compressor system. Took it to my trusted workshop and they diagnosed it properly. The fix wasn't super complex, but it cost me about 240 Euro to get everything sorted. Before I share more specific details about what they did for mine, can you tell me if you're getting any specific error codes? Also, when did this start happening? Does your i8 make any unusual sounds when you try to turn on the A/C? I know these BMW hybrids can be tricky, but once you nail down the exact issue, it's usually fixable without major headaches.

Thanks for sharing your i3 experience! Mine's at 149681 KM since my latest service. My A/C issues started about a week ago, completely out of the blue. When I try to start it, there's this weird clicking sound from the front, followed by nothing, total silence. I'm getting error code 'P0A3B', which from what I've read could be compressor-related. Appreciate the tip about the undervoltage, that's definitely something I'll have them check. Did your mechanic mention anything about the hybrid system's connection to the A/C system? Really want to get this sorted before it gets more complicated.

Hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your i8, that clicking sound and the P0A3B code definitely rings a bell. You know, when I had my i3 problem, it made that exact same clicking noise. My mechanic explained that in these BMW hybrids, the A/C compressor is actually integrated with the electric drive system, pretty clever engineering, but also means more potential complications. In my case, after they dug deeper, they found that the voltage regulator for the compressor was acting up, causing those weird clicks. The undervoltage issue I mentioned earlier was just a symptom of this bigger problem. They had to recalibrate the voltage regulator and replace a faulty sensor, that's what made up most of that 240 euro bill I mentioned. At 149k KM, you're actually not far off from where I was when I had my issues (mine was around 152k). These problems seem to pop up around this mileage point in these models. If you're hearing the same clicking sound I did, I'd bet you're looking at a similar fix. Just make sure your workshop knows their way around hybrid systems, that was key in getting mine fixed right the first time. Have you booked it in yet? I'd be really interested to hear if they find the same issue as mine.

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! That's super helpful, especially knowing your i3 had such similar symptoms at almost the same mileage. You've actually made me feel a lot better about this whole situation. I just booked my car in for next week with a workshop that specializes in hybrids, made sure to mention everything about the clicking sound and the P0A3B code. I actually mentioned your voltage regulator issue to them over the phone, and they seemed to think that could be a strong possibility. 240 Euro doesn't sound too bad at all, considering how worried I was about potential major repairs. Really appreciate you sharing all this info about your experience. I'll definitely let you know what they find when they check it out. Fingers crossed it's just the voltage regulator like yours was!
