BMW i8 Steering Controls Dead: Safety Systems Fail

Has anyone dealt with steering wheel controls and safety system failures in their i8? Having issues with my 2016 BMW i8 Hybrid (151,918 km). The steering wheel buttons stopped working completely, and now I'm getting warnings about failed assistance systems and airbag malfunction. The error codes point to the steering wheel, but after a previous bad experience with a mechanic, I want to hear from others who've faced similar problems. Any suggestions on what to check or recommendations for fixing this? Really trying to avoid another costly misdiagnosis.

I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW i4 Hybrid. The steering wheel controls suddenly died, triggering multiple warnings including the airbag system. Turned out the clock spring (spiral cable) in the steering wheel was defective. Got it checked at the garage last month, they found corrosion in the connection points and some worn-out wiring in the steering column. The cable assembly needed complete replacement since it affects multiple safety systems. It's not something you want to leave unattended, as it controls airbag deployment and driver assistance features. The repair involved removing the steering wheel and replacing the entire cable assembly. While not the most complex job, it's definitely one for professionals due to the safety systems involved. Mine was sorted in about 4 hours. Since the fix, all systems are working perfectly, no more warning lights or malfunctions.

Thanks for sharing your experience, this sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with! Really helpful to know about the clock spring and corrosion issues. Saves me from running around in circles trying to diagnose it. Would you mind telling me how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also curious if you've had any other problems since getting it fixed? I've learned the hard way that these high-tech steering systems can be tricky beasts.

Hey there! Happy to give you an update on my i4's repair situation. The whole thing cost me 95 € to fix, turned out it was just a faulty cable connection in the steering wheel. Really reasonable price considering what I was worried it might be! I'm glad I could help point you in the right direction with the clock spring issue. Since getting it sorted out, I haven't had a single problem with the multifunction steering wheel or any of those annoying warning messages. Everything's working exactly as it should, all the buttons respond perfectly, and those nerve-wracking safety system warnings are completely gone. Speaking of tricky beasts, you're spot on about these advanced steering systems! But once you get the right diagnosis and fix, they're actually pretty solid. If your symptoms are matching what I had, sounds like you're on the right track. Let me know how it goes when you get yours checked out!

Thanks for all the details! I took my i8 to a certified mechanic yesterday after hearing about your experience. Turns out you were right about everything, it was indeed the clock spring causing all those warnings. The technician found similar corrosion issues in my steering column too. The repair cost was a bit higher than yours since they had to order a specific part for the i8 model, but honestly, I'm just relieved it wasn't something more serious. The mechanic was really thorough and explained everything while fixing it. Only took about 3 hours, and now all my controls are working perfectly again. No more warning lights or system failures! I was pretty nervous about getting it fixed after my last bad mechanic experience, but your advice helped me know exactly what to look for and what questions to ask. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your story, saved me from another potential misdiagnosis nightmare!
