BMW iX Powertrain Overheating, Cooling System Issues?

Hi all, having issues with my 2023 BMW iX electric vehicle. The powertrain keeps overheating and switches to emergency mode. Getting engine overheat warnings on the dash. I suspect the cooling fan might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar cooling system problems on their iX? Would love to know what the actual issue was and how your workshop resolved it. Thanks for any insights!

Hi there! I have some experience with EVs and actually faced a similar issue with my 2021 BMW i4 (also had a chance to drive the iX3). Had the same symptoms, powertrain overheating warnings and emergency mode kicking in. Took it to my workshop last month, and it turned out to be a faulty connector in the cooling system control unit. The cable connection had worked itself loose over time, causing the cooling system to malfunction. Got it fixed for 95 Euro, they basically had to reconnect and secure the cable properly. Been running perfectly since then with no overheating warnings. Could be something similar in your case, but would need more info to be sure. How often does it happen? Any specific conditions (during charging, high-speed driving)? Have you noticed any error codes? Let me know these details and I might be able to help further!

Thanks for the detailed response! The issue happens mostly during highway driving and fast charging. Been dealing with this for about 2 weeks now. Mine's at 88667 km and had its latest service just 2 months ago. No error codes showing up besides the overheat warning. The loose connector issue you mentioned sounds promising, definitely cheaper than what I was fearing! I'll have the workshop check the cooling system connections first. Really hoping it's something this straightforward and not a major component failure. Did you notice any performance improvements after your repair? Mine's been quite sluggish when the warning appears.

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, I definitely noticed a huge difference after they fixed that connector issue on my i4. The sluggish performance completely disappeared, it was like getting a new car back! Before the fix, mine was also struggling during fast charging and longer highway drives, just like yours. What really caught my attention in your response is that the issues started after your recent service. Funny enough, that's exactly when my problems began too. Makes me wonder if something got knocked loose during the maintenance work. These EVs are pretty sensitive to even small issues in the cooling system. When my car was running in emergency mode, it was super frustrating, felt like driving a golf cart instead of a BMW! But once they sorted out that connector, the full power came right back. The repair was quick too, took them less than an hour to diagnose and fix. One thing I'd suggest, have them check all the cooling system connections, not just one spot. Sometimes these connectors can work loose in multiple places. Better to have them do a thorough check while they're at it. Keep me posted on what they find. Really curious to know if it's the same issue as mine!

Thanks so much for all this information! You're right, the timing with the recent service is quite suspicious. I've just booked an appointment with my workshop for tomorrow morning. Asked them specifically to check all cooling system connections based on your experience. The golf cart comparison made me laugh because that's exactly how it feels! It's such a relief to hear your car returned to full power after the fix. Really gives me hope that mine might just need something equally simple. And honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if something got knocked loose during the service, these cars are pretty complex under the hood. I'll definitely update you once I get it checked out. Thanks again for walking me through your experience, it's been super helpful and definitely made me feel less worried about the whole situation. Here's hoping I'll be back to full power soon instead of puttering around in "golf cart mode"!
