BMW iX1 Battery Mysteriously Drains When Parked

Hey everyone! My 2022 BMW iX1 (electric) with 43,422 km is giving me headaches lately. The battery keeps dying completely when the car sits for a while, and I'm getting warning lights on the dash. The lights are also weak and flickering. Had a bad experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone experienced similar battery drain issues with their iX1? What was the actual problem and where did you get it fixed? Would appreciate some insights before I take it to a shop. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW i3s last month. The symptoms you're describing match exactly what I experienced, dead battery, warning lights, and dim flickering lights. Took it to the dealer and turns out it was a faulty battery management sensor. The sensor was misreading the charge levels and not properly managing the power distribution, causing unusual battery drains even when the car wasn't in use. The fix wasn't particularly complex, they replaced the sensor module and recalibrated the battery management system. However, it's definitely not something you want to ignore as it can lead to more serious electrical system damage if left unchecked. Since it's the same issue I faced, I'd strongly suggest getting it checked at a certified BMW service center. This is a known issue with some electric BMWs and they have a specific diagnostic protocol for it. The repair itself took about half a day in my case. Better to address it now than risk getting stranded somewhere with a dead battery. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful as I've been worried about taking it in. The symptoms match exactly what I'm dealing with. Would you mind letting me know roughly how much the sensor replacement and recalibration set you back? Also wondering if you've had any other electrical quirks pop up since getting it fixed?

Hey again! Happy to update you! Yes, I got the sensor issue fixed and it cost me 315 € total, that included the new sensor, labor, and the recalibration. Honestly, it was worth every penny because the problem's completely solved now. The best part is that since the repair, my battery's performing perfectly, no more unusual discharges or warning lights. The electrical system's working like a charm too, with nice bright headlights and no more flickering. It's such a relief not having to worry about coming back to a dead battery anymore! Haven't had a single electrical problem since the fix, which was about three weeks ago now. The car feels like new again, and I can actually leave it parked for days without that nagging worry in the back of my mind. If you're still on the fence about getting it checked out, I'd say just go for it. The peace of mind alone is worth it, and it's better to tackle these things before they potentially cause bigger issues. Let me know if you need any other info!

Thanks so much for all the details! I actually took your advice and got my iX1 checked out at the service center yesterday. You were spot on, it was indeed the battery management sensor causing all the trouble. Funny enough, my repair bill came to about the same as yours. The mechanic was really thorough and explained everything. Had to leave my car there for about 5 hours, but it was worth the wait. They also did a full system check while they were at it. Just drove it home and wow, what a difference! The lights are bright and steady, no more warning lights on the dash, and the battery's holding charge perfectly. Such a relief to have this sorted out. Definitely beats my old mechanic who couldn't even diagnose the problem properly. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it gave me the confidence to get this fixed before it turned into something worse. Thanks again for the help!
