BMW M2 Power Steering Nightmare, Heavy Wheel & Shaking

Hi all! My 2018 BMW M2 (55k km) is giving me headaches with the power steering. The wheel feels super heavy, shakes quite a bit, and the handling isn't what it used to be. There's also some error code stored in the system. After a disappointing experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar steering issues on their M2? Would love to hear about your experiences and recommendations for getting it fixed properly. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2018 BMW M2 owner experienced heavy steering, shaking, and handling issues, with an error code indicating a power steering problem. A similar case involved a faulty power steering wiring harness, leading to stiff steering and vibrations. The solution involved replacing the harness and resealing connections. Another user suggested checking for faulty cable connections, a common issue in these models, which can be a straightforward fix. The owner eventually resolved the problem by repairing a faulty connection, restoring smooth and responsive steering.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2015 BMW M4 last year. The power steering started acting up, heavy steering, vibrations, the whole deal. Turned out the power steering wiring harness had some damaged connections, and moisture got in there over time. My steering started getting really stiff, especially during low-speed maneuvers. The diagnostic showed a power steering control module fault code. Initially thought it was the pump, but the harness was the culprit. Had to replace the entire wiring harness and reseal the connections properly. This was definitely a serious issue since power steering is crucial for safe handling. You really don't want to risk it failing completely. The repair wasn't just a quick fix, they had to remove several components to access and replace the harness. Car's been running perfectly since then, steering is smooth as it should be. Based on your symptoms, sounds very similar to what I experienced. Get it checked soon, these steering issues usually don't fix themselves and can get worse.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Glad to hear you got it sorted. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other steering-related issues popping up?

Hey again! Great to hear back from you. Actually, I'm really glad I can give you some good news, I just got my M4 back from the mechanic last week after dealing with that power steering issue I mentioned. It was a much simpler fix than I initially feared, turned out to be just a faulty cable connection that needed fixing. Only cost me 95 € in the end, which was a huge relief because I was worried it might be something more serious like when I had that harness problem last year. The steering's working perfectly now, nice and smooth, no more of that heavy feeling or shaking. Honestly feels just like when the car was new. I've been driving it daily since the repair and no issues whatsoever. The mechanic said these cable/connection problems are actually pretty common on these models, and usually a straightforward fix once they identify the exact spot. Really happy I got it sorted quickly this time. If your symptoms are similar, might be worth checking the connections first before assuming it's something more serious. Keeping my fingers crossed it's a simple fix for you too!

Thanks for the follow-up, and I'm relieved to share my own resolution! Just got back from the mechanic yesterday. After checking multiple places, I found a really good shop that specializes in BMWs. The issue turned out to be exactly what you described, a faulty connection in the steering system. The repair was straightforward and much cheaper than I expected. The whole thing, including diagnostics and labor, came to about €300. I was bracing for a much bigger hit to my wallet! Been driving the M2 since yesterday, and what a difference! The steering is back to being smooth and responsive, no more wrestling with the wheel or dealing with those weird vibrations. It feels like I've got my car back. Really appreciate everyone's input on this. Having your experiences to reference helped me push through the initial worries and get it sorted properly. Definitely learned my lesson about addressing these issues quickly rather than letting them drag on!
