Thanks for sharing your experience! That really helps since it sounds exactly like my problem. I'm planning to take it to a certified dealer this week based on your advice. Would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also curious if you've had any other issues pop up since they fixed it?

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up on your questions. I took my M4 to the certified dealer, and my repair was actually much simpler than initially expected. The mechanic found it was just a coding issue, no physical damage to worry about, thankfully! The total bill came to 75 € for the coding work, which was such a relief compared to what I was expecting. They basically had to reinitialize and recalibrate the sunroof system through their diagnostic equipment. Since the fix, everything's been working perfectly, no more error messages, and the sunroof's been operating smoothly. Much better outcome than I originally posted about, when I was worried about water damage and wiring issues! Sometimes these problems turn out to be simpler than they seem. Really glad I didn't need the extensive repairs I mentioned in my first post. Hope your repair turns out to be equally straightforward!

Thanks for the update! I actually just got back from the dealer today and wanted to share how it went. Turns out my issue was a bit more complicated than yours, they found a worn-out motor and some damaged sensors in the roof mechanism. The whole thing cost me about 800 for parts and labor, but at least it's fixed now! They did a thorough job though, tested everything multiple times before giving me the car back. The convertible top is working perfectly now, smooth as butter, and that annoying error message is finally gone. The mechanic also showed me what was wrong and explained everything, which I really appreciated. While it wasn't as cheap as your repair, I'm actually relieved I followed your advice and went to the certified dealer. They clearly knew what they were doing, and I feel much more confident about the fix than I would've with my old mechanic. Thanks again for helping me make that decision, definitely worth the extra cost for peace of mind!

Had a similar issue with my 2014 BMW M4 last month. The sunroof system completely failed, showing the same error message you're describing. Took it to the dealership where they diagnosed a faulty control module and damaged wiring harness. The coding process after replacement was quite extensive, they had to reinitialize the entire roof system and recalibrate all the sensors. Turned out the original wiring had some water damage that caused a short circuit. It was definitely a serious repair job since they had to remove multiple interior panels to access the system. The whole process took about three days. The sunroof works perfectly now, but I'd recommend getting it fixed soon as water damage could spread to other electrical components if left unchecked. Your issue sounds identical to what I experienced. Would strongly suggest going to a certified BMW dealer for this one since it requires specific diagnostic equipment and coding knowledge.
