BMW M4 Error Messages: Help with System Diagnostics

Hey everyone, having some trouble with my 2020 BMW M4. Getting error messages in both the error memory and speedometer display. I think it might be related to an incomplete system readiness check but not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic resolve it? Looking to gather some insights before heading to the workshop.

Summary of the thread

A 2020 BMW M4 owner is experiencing error messages related to an incomplete system readiness check, appearing in both the error memory and speedometer display. A similar issue was resolved by another BMW owner through regular driving, allowing the system to complete its self-checks. The suggested solution is to perform longer drives to potentially clear the error messages, as the car is otherwise functioning normally. If the warnings persist after a week of regular driving, further diagnostics may be necessary.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi there! I've got some experience working on BMWs. Had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW M2 last month. From what you're describing, it sounds familiar. My diagnostic reading showed error codes too, but it turned out to be nothing serious. Since my car was just checked with an OBD2 scanner recently, the system needed a proper drive cycle to reset itself. After about 20-30 minutes of normal driving, the error messages cleared up on their own. Before jumping to conclusions, could you share: What specific error messages you're seeing? Have you had any recent work or diagnostics done on the car? Are you experiencing any actual performance issues? That way, I might be able to help figure out if you're dealing with the same thing I did or if it's something else entirely.

Thanks for the detailed response! Glad to hear your issue was resolved easily. To answer your questions, I'm seeing "System Check Incomplete" alongside some drivetrain warnings. Just had my last service at 88312 KM and they did run diagnostics. No performance issues noticed, car drives perfectly fine. The error messages just keep popping up out of nowhere during drives. I'm thinking it might be similar to what you experienced with the drive cycle reset. Did you have to drive in any specific way to clear yours, or just regular driving? I'm hoping it's equally straightforward and not something more serious.

Hey again! Thanks for providing those extra details about your M4. Yeah, this really does sound identical to what I experienced with my M2. When it happened to me, I actually didn't need to do anything special with the driving, just regular, normal driving did the trick. I remember being pretty worried at first, especially seeing those drivetrain warnings pop up out of nowhere like you mentioned. But since you're not experiencing any actual performance issues (just like in my case), I'm even more convinced it's the same situation. After my service (mine was around 85000 KM), it took about three regular drives for everything to sort itself out. The system just needed time to complete all its self-checks. One thing I noticed was that the warnings would sometimes come back if I only did very short trips, but once I had a few longer drives, they disappeared completely. Since your car's driving fine and you've just had a service, I'd suggest giving it a few more regular drives. If the warnings are still there after a week of normal driving, then maybe get it checked out. But honestly, based on my experience, I think you'll see those messages clear up on their own pretty soon. Let me know how it goes, always curious to hear if others have the same experience I did with these BMWs!

Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience in such detail! This definitely puts my mind at ease. You're right, it does sound exactly like what you went through. I've mostly been doing short trips lately, so that could explain why the system hasn't had a chance to complete its checks properly. I'll take your advice and do some longer drives over the next few days. It's such a relief to know this is likely just a normal post-service thing rather than a serious issue. Sure beats having to spend time and money at the workshop for something that might resolve itself! Thanks again for all the help. It's great to hear from someone who's dealt with the same thing. I'll probably update this thread once the warnings clear up, just in case anyone else runs into similar issues with their M4.
