BMW X1 Engine Struggles: Fuel Issues and Performance Drop

Hey all! Need some advice with my 2019 BMW X1 (gas engine, 119k km). My car's been acting up lately, engine feels sluggish, check engine light is on, and it jerks when I accelerate. Also noticed I'm burning through fuel faster than usual. Last mechanic visit wasn't great, so I'm a bit hesitant to go back there. I'm thinking it might be running too rich, but wanted to hear if anyone's dealt with similar symptoms and can recommend a trustworthy mechanic who's good with BMWs? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had almost identical issues with my 2016 BMW X3 last year. The symptoms you're describing match exactly what I experienced, poor acceleration, jerky response, and terrible fuel economy. Turned out to be a faulty fuel injector. Got it diagnosed at the dealership, the injector wasn't atomizing fuel properly, causing uneven fuel distribution. The excess fuel was making the engine run rich, explaining the high consumption and rough performance. Had to replace two injectors in the end. It's definitely a serious issue that needs addressing soon, running rich can damage your catalytic converter and other engine components if left unchecked. When I ignored it initially, the performance just kept getting worse. The repair wasn't too complex, but it's crucial to have someone who knows BMWs do the work, since they'll need proper diagnostic tools to identify which injector is problematic and calibrate the new ones correctly. Best to get it checked soon, these symptoms don't fix themselves and usually get worse with time. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, that's super helpful! My symptoms do sound exactly like what you went through with your X3. I'll definitely get it checked out asap, don't want to risk damaging anything else. Would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the injector replacement? Also curious if you've had any other issues pop up since the repair? Thanks again, really appreciate the detailed response!

Hey again! Happy to update you! Just got my X3 back from the shop actually, and guess what, it's running like a dream now! They found one bad injector that was dumping way too much fuel into the engine. Total bill came to 515 € for replacing the faulty injector. Worth every penny though, the difference is like night and day. Since the fix (about two weeks now), my fuel consumption is back to normal and that annoying jerking during acceleration is completely gone. No more check engine light either! Honestly feels like I'm driving a new car again. Just to ease your mind, I haven't had any other issues pop up since the repair. The mechanic mentioned that catching it early probably prevented any damage to the catalytic converter, so that was a relief. I know you were worried about finding a good mechanic, if you want any other specific advice about the repair process, just let me know. The most important thing is getting it sorted before it causes more problems down the line. Let us know how it goes when you get yours checked out!

Just wanted to update everyone, took my X1 to a new mechanic yesterday and you were spot on! It was indeed a faulty fuel injector. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it checked out. The repair cost me a bit more than yours, ended up being around 650 € because they had to replace two injectors. But honestly, what a difference! Took it for a drive this morning and it feels completely different, smooth acceleration, no more jerking, and the engine's running quietly again. The mechanic was actually really great, showed me the old injectors and explained everything. He also did a full diagnostic scan to make sure there weren't any other issues lurking around. Thanks again for pushing me to get it checked out quickly. You probably saved me from some bigger problems down the road. Really happy to have this sorted out, feels good to have my car running properly again!
