BMW X2 Timing Issues: Engine Power Loss & Cold Start Noise
Summary of the thread
A 2023 BMW X2 is experiencing engine power loss, poor fuel economy, and a metallic noise during cold starts, with a check engine light indicating timing-related sensor errors. The suspected issue is a crankshaft-camshaft timing problem. A similar case with a BMW X1 involved a failing crankshaft sensor, which was resolved by replacing the sensor, restoring performance and eliminating the noise. The suggested solution is to have the vehicle diagnosed promptly, as the issue might be a straightforward sensor replacement rather than a more serious timing system problem.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My X2 has the gasoline engine variant, and these issues started showing up about two weeks ago. I just had my service done at 55440 KM, and everything was fine then. It's concerning that this is happening on such a new car. Your sensor situation sounds very similar to what I'm experiencing. Did you notice any specific rpm range where the power loss was most noticeable? I'm finding it particularly sluggish between 2000-3000 rpm. The metallic sound is definitely worrying me the most though, especially since it's most prominent during those cold starts you mentioned. Might give my regular mechanic a call based on your feedback. The price you mentioned seems reasonable if it's just a sensor issue. Really hoping it's not something more serious with the timing system itself.

Hey again! Yeah, that rpm range you mentioned, 2000-3000, is exactly where I noticed the worst performance too on my X1. It was super frustrating, especially when trying to merge onto highways. The metallic noise was definitely nerve-wracking for me as well. I actually recorded it on my phone to show my mechanic, which helped with the diagnosis. Like yours, my issues showed up pretty suddenly, maybe over the course of a week or so. Quick update on my repair, it's been about 8 months since I got the sensor replaced, and everything's still running perfectly. No more cold start noises, power's back to normal, and my fuel consumption is back to what it should be. One thing I'd suggest, don't wait too long to get it checked out. I made that mistake and drove it for about a week with the symptoms, which probably wasn't the smartest move. Even though these BMWs are pretty robust, timing-related issues can get worse if left unchecked. Let me know what your mechanic says. I'm curious if it turns out to be the same problem as mine. These newer BMWs seem to have similar patterns when things go wrong.

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! You're absolutely right, I won't wait around to get this checked. I actually just called my mechanic and booked an appointment for tomorrow morning. The fact that your symptoms match mine so closely, especially that specific RPM range issue, gives me some hope that it's just the sensor. I've actually started recording the cold start noise too, great minds think alike! It'll definitely help show the mechanic exactly what I'm dealing with. Really relieved to hear your repair has held up well for 8 months. That's super reassuring. I'll update you once I get the diagnosis. Fingers crossed it's just the sensor and nothing more serious. The repair cost you mentioned would be much better than dealing with major timing system work! Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's been really helpful in understanding what I might be dealing with.

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs. Had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW X1 last winter. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through, engine light, sluggish performance, and that awful metallic noise on cold starts. Turned out my crankshaft sensor was failing. Took it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. Cost me around 340 Euro for the fix, parts and labor included. Since then, the car's been running like a dream. What engine variant does your X2 have? Also, when did these symptoms first appear? Might help narrow down if we're dealing with the same issue. Timing-related problems can be tricky with these engines, but usually, it's something straightforward like the sensor.
