Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's at 199544 KM and just had its service last month. The noise definitely changes with RPM and I'm getting the P1119 code. Your situation sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. Good to know it was a straightforward fix, I was worried it might be something more serious with the engine. I'll get in touch with a workshop and have them check the actuator. Unfortunately, my warranty expired years ago, so I'll have to cover this one myself. Did you notice any other symptoms before getting it fixed that I should watch out for?

Oh hey again! Yeah, reading your details now, especially that P1119 code and the RPM-dependent noise, it's definitely the same issue I had with my X5. Man, it's like déjà vu! Before I got mine fixed, I actually noticed a few other things. The exhaust note would suddenly get really aggressive during normal driving, especially when accelerating from low speeds. Also, sometimes there was this slight rattling sound from the back of the car at idle. Don't worry though, none of these caused any engine damage in my case. Since you mentioned your mileage is at 199544 KM, it's pretty much the same ballpark as when mine failed (around 190000 KM). It's actually a common wear item at this mileage from what my mechanic told me. Quick tip from my experience, when you get it fixed, make sure they check the exhaust flap linkage and springs too. My mechanic found that the springs were pretty worn, and replacing those along with the actuator made the fix much more reliable. Didn't add much to the total cost but definitely worth doing while they're in there. Keep us posted on how it goes! Always good to compare notes on these repairs.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! You've really put my mind at ease. I'm actually hearing that exact same rattling at idle you mentioned, and yeah, the unusual aggressive exhaust note too, should've mentioned that earlier! I'll definitely take your advice about getting the springs and linkage checked while they're working on it. Makes total sense to do it all at once rather than having to go back later. I've already called a workshop and booked it in for next week. The price they quoted was pretty close to what you paid, which is a relief. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's always nerve-wracking when your car starts making weird noises, but knowing someone else has successfully dealt with the same issue makes it way less stressful. I'll make sure to update you once it's fixed!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and had a similar issue with my 2004 BMW X5 last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with, loud exhaust, especially during cold starts. My exhaust flap was completely stuck and threw error codes too. Took it to my trusted workshop and they confirmed the exhaust flap actuator was defective. The whole repair, including parts and labor, cost me around 190 Euro. The noise difference after the fix was like night and day! Before I can share more specific details, could you tell me if you're getting any specific error codes? Also, is the noise constant or does it vary with engine RPM? This would help me understand if you're dealing with the exact same issue I had. By the way, have you checked if it's still under any extended warranty? Some BMW models had extended coverage for exhaust-related issues.
