BMW X4 Brake Light Warning, Switch Problem?

Hey everyone! My 2017 BMW X4 has been acting up lately. The brake light warning keeps popping up in the instrument cluster, and I've got an error code stored in the system. I suspect it might be the brake light switch causing these issues. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Looking for workshop solutions that worked for you. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I've got some experience working on BMWs, I had a similar issue with my 2015 BMW X3 last year. Not a pro mechanic, but I've got some basic car maintenance experience. The same warning light issue happened to me, and I was worried it might be expensive. Turned out it was just the brake pedal not fully returning to its resting position. A bit of WD-40 on the pedal spring mechanism fixed it right up, cost nothing but a few minutes of my time. Before suggesting more specific solutions, could you share: Have you checked if your brake pedal feels different than usual? Are there any other warning lights showing up? Have you scanned for the specific error code? My X3 had similar electronics to your X4, so I might be able to help more with that info.

Thanks for the input! I've got 68481 KM on my X4, and it was just serviced last month. The brake pedal actually feels normal when I press it, but that warning light is super annoying. Haven't tried the WD-40 trick yet, that's a neat suggestion. I did get it scanned and it's showing error code B7632, but no other warning lights are coming up. Might give your solution a shot before taking it to the shop since it seems like a simple fix. Did you spray the WD-40 while the pedal was pressed down or in its normal position?

Hey again! Good to hear back from you about your X4. Yeah, the warning lights can drive you crazy, I totally get that! When I did the WD-40 fix on my X3, I actually sprayed it with the pedal in its normal position first, then pressed it a few times to work the lubricant in. Just make sure to use a rag underneath to catch any drips! Since you mentioned error code B7632, that's actually the exact same code I got on mine. One thing I should mention though, while the WD-40 worked for me initially, I ended up having to replace the brake light switch about two months later. It was a relatively cheap part, around 30 bucks, and took maybe 20 minutes to swap out. The warning light hasn't come back since. With your mileage being similar to what mine was when this happened (I was at about 71000 KM), it could be the same issue. These switches tend to get a bit finicky around this age. If the WD-40 doesn't do the trick, I'd say just go ahead and replace the switch. It's a pretty straightforward DIY job if you're comfortable with basic repairs. Let me know how it goes with the WD-40. If you need any pointers on replacing the switch, I'm happy to share what I learned!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! That's super helpful, especially knowing you had the exact same error code. I'll definitely try the WD-40 trick tonight, good tip about using a rag to catch the drips. Really appreciate the heads-up about potentially needing to replace the switch later on. The fact that it's only a 30 buck part makes me feel a lot better about this whole situation. Might actually order the switch now just to have it on hand in case the WD-40 is just a temporary fix. I'm pretty comfortable with basic car maintenance, so I might take you up on those pointers if I end up needing to replace the switch. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's exactly what I was hoping to learn when I posted this question. I'll be sure to update once I've tried the WD-40 solution!
