BMW X4 Power Loss & Check Engine Light Mystery Solved

Hi there! Having trouble with my 2021 BMW X4 (157,262 km, gas engine) and need some input. My check engine light is on and I'm experiencing noticeable power loss. The diagnostic shows it might be the intake air temp sensor, but I'm hesitant about going to a mechanic after a recent bad experience. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their X4? What was the actual issue and how much did the repair cost? Any recommendations would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW X3 last year. The symptoms were exactly like yours, check engine light and significant power loss, especially during acceleration. The diagnostic also pointed to the intake air temperature sensor. I decided to get it checked professionally despite my initial hesitation. Turned out the sensor was indeed faulty and had corroded connections. The fix wasn't too complex, they replaced the sensor and cleaned the surrounding wiring harness. It wasn't a serious issue in terms of engine damage, but it definitely needed attention to prevent further performance problems. The repair took about two hours total. My advice would be to get it fixed sooner rather than later, as running with a faulty sensor can affect your fuel efficiency and engine performance. The symptoms won't go away on their own, and they might get worse over time. Just make sure they check the wiring connections too, not just the sensor itself. That's what made the difference in my case. Best of luck with the repair.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, I actually just got back from having this exact repair done at my mechanic. Happy to report that fixing the faulty intake air temperature sensor solved all the issues I mentioned before. The total bill came to 155 €, definitely worth it considering how much better the car is running now! Since getting it fixed, my X3 has been performing beautifully. The power loss issue completely disappeared, and the check engine light hasn't come back on. It's been smooth sailing for several months now. The acceleration feels crisp again, just like it should. I keep thinking how glad I am that I didn't put off getting it repaired. My mechanic mentioned that leaving it unfixed could have led to more expensive problems down the road. Honestly, for the price and the improvement in performance, it was totally worth overcoming my initial hesitation about going to a mechanic. Hope this helps with your decision-making! Let me know if you have any other questions about the repair.

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! You've really put my mind at ease. I actually just scheduled an appointment with a mechanic for tomorrow morning. Funny enough, I had the same thoughts about putting it off, but hearing about your positive outcome convinced me to just get it done. The price you mentioned sounds pretty reasonable too, especially considering how much better your car is running now. I was worried it might be some major engine issue that would cost thousands, so this is a relief. Just got off the phone with my mechanic and they specialize in European cars, so feeling much more confident about the whole thing. Will definitely get them to check those wiring connections you mentioned too. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. It's exactly what I needed to hear to take action. I'll stop stressing about it now and just get it sorted. Thanks again for all the help!
