BMW X4 Stalling and Check Engine Light, Fuel System Issue?

Hi all, having issues with my 2023 BMW X4. The engine light is on, and the car keeps stalling when idling. When scanned, it shows error codes. I suspect it might be fuel-related. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Thanks in advance!

Hi there! I've got some experience with BMWs since I drive a 2021 BMW X3, and I had a somewhat similar issue last year. I'm not a mechanic but have some experience with basic car maintenance. The symptoms you're describing sound very familiar. My X3 was doing the same thing, engine light on and stalling at idle. Took it to my trusted workshop, and it turned out to be a faulty wiring connection to the fuel pump sensor. The repair was pretty straightforward, they replaced some corroded cables and connectors, cost me around 95 Euro, and the problem never came back. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share: How long has this been happening? Does it occur more often when the engine is cold or warm? Have you noticed any other warning lights besides the check engine light? This info would help me confirm if it's similar to what I experienced with my X3 or something else entirely.

Thanks for the detailed response! Mine has been acting up for about a week now. It happens regardless of engine temperature, and no other warning lights are showing. My car just had its service at 172136 KM, and everything was fine until this started. Really hoping it's just a sensor issue like yours and not something more serious with the fuel system. I've noticed it stalls more frequently during stop-and-go situations, which is super annoying. The error codes point towards fuel delivery, but I wanted to check with other X4 owners before heading to the workshop. Let me know if any other symptoms match what you experienced.

Hey again! Yep, that definitely sounds like what my X3 went through. After hearing about your specific symptoms, I'm even more convinced it's similar to what I experienced. When you mentioned the stop-and-go stalling, that's exactly what mine was doing, super frustrating, especially when you're caught in traffic! Mine also started acting up right after hitting the 170K mark, and the timing of yours happening after the service is interesting. Sometimes these issues can pop up when something gets disturbed during routine maintenance. In my case, the mechanics found that some of the connections had gotten loose over time, and the service might have been the final straw that made the problem noticeable. Since you've got the error codes pointing to fuel delivery, I'm pretty confident it's in the same ballpark as my issue. The fact that it's happening regardless of engine temperature also matches my experience. What really sealed the deal for me was when my mechanic explained that these sensor/wiring issues often get misdiagnosed as actual fuel system problems. Just to be safe though, have you noticed any unusual fuel consumption or performance issues besides the stalling? Mine was pretty much normal except for the stalling problem. If yours is the same, I'd bet money it's that wiring connection I mentioned earlier. Keep us posted on what you find out at the workshop!

Thanks so much for all this info, it's really reassuring to hear your experience! And no, I haven't noticed any change in fuel consumption or performance issues besides the stalling. Everything else runs perfectly normal, which matches what you described. You're probably right about the service possibly disturbing something, makes total sense. I've gone ahead and booked an appointment at the workshop for tomorrow morning. I feel much more confident now going in there with this information about the wiring connections. At least I won't feel completely in the dark when they start explaining what's wrong. I'll definitely keep you posted about what they find. Really hoping it's just those wiring connections like in your case, sounds like a much better scenario than having to replace major fuel system components! Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience. It's helped me understand what I might be dealing with, and honestly, it's made me a lot less worried about the whole situation. Will update the thread once I know what's actually wrong with it.
