BMW X5 Start-Stop Failure Leads to Random Engine Stalls

Thanks for the info! My X5 is currently at 107803 KM and had its last service about 3 months ago. I haven't checked the battery voltage yet, but come to think of it, the battery is still the original one from 2019. I'll definitely get the voltage tested. Did the diagnostic show any specific error codes in your case? The warning light I'm getting looks like a yellow engine symbol, and I'm wondering if it's the same one you had.

Hey again! Yes, I remember my case clearly. When my X3 showed these symptoms, I got the same yellow engine warning light you're describing. The diagnostic showed error code P0562 (System Voltage Low) and a few related battery management system codes. Since your battery is the original one from 2019, I'd bet money that's your culprit. Mine was about 4 years old when it failed, which is pretty typical for these modern BMWs with all their electrical demands. The start-stop system is particularly sensitive to battery health. One thing I forgot to mention in my first reply, before the battery completely failed, I noticed the car was taking slightly longer to start in the mornings. Did you notice anything like that? Also, my radio and navigation system would occasionally reset while driving, though not everyone experiences that symptom. I'd definitely recommend getting that battery checked ASAP. The unusual engine shutoffs are really scary, I had one happen while merging onto a busy road, which is what finally pushed me to get it fixed. Given your mileage and battery age, you're probably due for a replacement anyway.

Thanks so much for all this detailed information! Actually, now that you mention it, I have noticed the car taking a bit longer to start in the mornings these past few weeks. I just didn't connect the dots until now. And yes, my radio has reset itself a couple times recently, I thought I was going crazy! You've really helped me narrow this down. I'll get the battery checked first thing tomorrow. The unusual shutoffs are definitely scary, had one happen at a junction yesterday which really freaked me out. Think I'll grab my OBD scanner from the garage tonight and check if I'm getting that P0562 code too. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. Sounds like I might be looking at a similar repair bill, but at least it's better than some of the major engine problems I was worried about. I'll update the thread once I get it sorted!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW X3 3.0L last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through, unusual shutdowns and start-stop system failing. Turned out my battery was severely discharged and couldn't maintain proper voltage. Took it to my trusted workshop, and they ran a full diagnostic. They discovered the battery cells were damaged and couldn't hold a charge anymore. Got it replaced for about 290 Euro, and that solved all the problems, no more unusual shutdowns or warning lights. Could you share if you've checked the battery voltage or how old your current battery is? Also, have you scanned for the specific error codes? This would help confirm if we're dealing with the same issue.
