BMW X5 Warning Lights Signal Possible Coolant Crisis

Need advice: BMW X5 (2019) coolant and engine warning lights Hey everyone! Having some concerns with my 2019 X5 (gas engine, 49,755 KM). Recently noticed the coolant temp warning and check engine lights are on. There's also an error code stored in the system. I suspect it might be a low coolant issue, but after a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar warning lights in their X5? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Also, would appreciate recommendations on what to check before taking it to a shop. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar situation with my BMW X3 (2016) last year. The coolant and engine warning combo turned out to be a faulty coolant level sensor connector. The cable connection had corroded and was giving false readings to the system. My mechanic found that despite the warning lights, the actual coolant level was fine. The main issue was just the sensor's wiring harness that needed replacement. It wasn't a serious problem, but definitely something that needed fixing to prevent false warnings and ensure proper monitoring of the coolant system. Before taking it to a shop, you can check your coolant level in the reservoir tank when the engine is cold. If it's between the min and max lines, the issue might be electrical, like in my case. Just make sure you get it checked soon, even though my issue turned out to be minor, coolant warnings shouldn't be ignored as they could indicate more serious problems. Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Glad to hear it wasn't anything too major in your case. Would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the sensor repair? And has everything been running smoothly since then? I'm hoping mine turns out to be a simple fix like yours.

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, yes, everything has been running perfectly since I got it fixed! I ended up paying 95 € for the repair, which mainly covered fixing that faulty cable connection to the sensor. Actually pretty reasonable considering it was at an authorized shop. The coolant level was indeed a bit low when they checked it, but they topped it up as part of the service. Since then, no more warning lights and the engine's been running like a charm. It's been about a year now with zero issues. I totally get why you were worried, those warning lights can be pretty unsettling. But looks like we had the exact same problem and it turned out to be nothing major. Just one of those electrical quirks these modern cars sometimes have. Quick tip though, even though my fix was simple, I'm still glad I didn't put off getting it checked. Better safe than sorry with these things, you know? Let me know how yours turns out!

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions! Just wanted to update you all on what happened with my X5. Finally got it checked out yesterday, and you were right about it being a minor issue. Turned out the coolant sensor connection was loose and triggering those warning lights. The mechanic I ended up going to was actually great, really took the time to show me what was wrong. Cost me around 110 for the fix, including a coolant top-up, which wasn't too bad. Felt a bit silly for worrying so much, but better to be cautious with these things! The best part is both warning lights are now off, and the car's running perfectly. Such a relief it wasn't anything major. Really glad I asked here first, helped me feel more confident about what I was dealing with. Thanks again for sharing your experiences, definitely helped me handle this situation better than my last mechanic drama!
