Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! I had almost the exact same problem with my X6 about six months ago. Really helpful to know it was the transmission control module in your case. Would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also curious if you've had any other transmission-related issues pop up since getting it fixed?

Hey again! Happy to update you! After taking my X5 to the certified shop, they fixed the Gear shift indicator display fault completely. The total bill came to 1000 € for replacing and reprogramming the faulty control unit. And you'll be glad to hear, no transmission problems whatsoever since then! It's been shifting like a dream, no more grinding sounds, and the gear indicator works perfectly. Honestly, it feels like a different car now. Just to give you peace of mind, these electronic control units do occasionally fail, but once properly fixed, they tend to stay fixed. My X5 has been running great for over a year now, and I've put on quite a few miles since the repair. Trust me, it's worth getting it sorted by professionals who know what they're doing. Let me know if you need any other details!

Thanks for the detailed update! I actually bit the bullet and took mine to a certified BMW shop last week. You were spot on about the transmission control module, that's exactly what it turned out to be. The repair cost me a bit more, around 1200 €, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The mechanic was super professional and even showed me the faulty unit. They got it done in just under two days, and the difference is like night and day. The transmission shifts perfectly now, no more weird noises, and that annoying check engine light is finally gone. Really glad I didn't try to save money by going to a regular mechanic, these electronic issues definitely need specialist knowledge. Thanks again for your help, really made me feel better about getting it properly fixed!

Hey there! Had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW X5 40i last year. The symptoms were almost identical, rough shifting, grinding noise, and wonky gear indicator display. The diagnostic showed it was the transmission control module that went bad, not the transmission itself. The module was affecting shift patterns and sending false signals to other systems, which triggered the check engine light. It was a serious issue that needed immediate attention since it could've led to transmission damage if left unfixed. Got it sorted at a certified shop. They had to replace the control module and reprogram the new unit. The whole process took about 2 days. It's been running smooth since then, no issues whatsoever. My advice, don't risk taking it to a regular mechanic. With these complex electronic issues, you really need someone who knows BMW systems inside out and has proper diagnostic tools. Hope this helps with your decision.
