BMW X7 Fuel Gauge Issues & Stalling, Sensor Problems?

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine has 82036 KM on the clock, and these issues started right after my latest service about 2 weeks ago. Actually, it does happen more noticeably after refueling, the gauge stays stuck at whatever level it was showing before I filled up. Getting error code P0463, and the stalling is really starting to bug me, especially in traffic. Guess I'll need to get it checked out properly. Just wanted to see if anyone else dealt with something similar before taking it in.

Hey again! I remember helping you earlier about this. After seeing your mileage and the P0463 code, I'm pretty sure your issue is different from what I experienced with my X5. That error code specifically points to the fuel level sensor circuit, not just a blown fuse like mine was. I actually had this exact problem pop up later on my X5 at around 90,000 KM, and it turned out to be more complex than just a fuse. The entire fuel sending unit needed replacement. The timing of your issues starting after a service is interesting, sometimes when they're working around that area, things can get disturbed. The repair for mine ended up being pricier than the fuse fix I mentioned before, around 800 bucks including parts and labor. But it solved all the issues, no more stalling, gauge works perfectly now, and the check engine light stayed off. Quick tip though, while you're waiting to get it serviced, try to keep your tank at least half full since your gauge isn't reliable. That's what I did to avoid any surprises! Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out. Curious to see if it's the same issue I had with the sending unit.

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! That's really helpful info about the fuel sending unit, definitely matches my symptoms better than just a fuse issue. Kind of worried about that price tag, but I guess it's better than being stranded somewhere! I've already scheduled an appointment with my mechanic for tomorrow morning. Really smart tip about keeping the tank half full, been doing exactly that since this started! I've actually been carrying a spare fuel can in the trunk just in case, probably being overly cautious but better safe than sorry. I'll definitely update you once I get the diagnosis. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's super helpful knowing what to expect when I take it in!

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs, and this sounds similar to what I dealt with on my 2020 BMW X5 last year. The symptoms were almost identical, stuck fuel gauge and stalling issues. After taking it to my regular workshop, turns out it was just a blown fuse connected to the fuel pump circuit. Pretty simple fix actually, they replaced the fuse, and everything went back to normal. Total cost was 52 Euro, mostly labor since the part was cheap. My has an X3 and had similar issues, so it seems to pop up across the BMW line sometimes. Before jumping to conclusions about the fuel level sensor though, could you share: How long has this been happening? Does it happen right after refueling? Which error code are you getting? This would help narrow down if you're dealing with the same issue I had.
