BMW X7 Throttle Issues? Here's What You Need to Know

Hi all! My 2019 BMW X7 with gas engine has been acting up lately. Engine jerks during acceleration, throttle response is weak, and I'm burning way more fuel than usual. Cold starts are also becoming a pain. I suspect it might be the throttle valve, but want to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. Has anyone experienced this combination of issues? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Any insights would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hey there! I had a very similar issue with my 2021 BMW X5 (also had a chance to work on an X3 before). I have some experience working on cars, mainly basic maintenance and diagnostics. Had the exact same symptoms, jerky acceleration, poor throttle response, and terrible fuel economy. Took it to my regular workshop after struggling with it for about two weeks. Turned out to be a faulty accelerator pedal module. The fix wasn't too complex, but it needed special diagnostic equipment to properly calibrate it. Total bill came to 205 Euro, and it's been running smooth since then. Could you share your current mileage and whether you've noticed any check engine lights? Also, when did these symptoms first appear? This info would help determine if we're dealing with the same issue.

Thanks for sharing! My current mileage is 136490 KM, and these issues started about 3 weeks ago. No check engine light yet, which is what's making this more confusing. Had my last service done just 2 months ago and everything was fine then. Your experience with the accelerator pedal module definitely sounds similar to what I'm dealing with. Did you notice if the jerking was more pronounced when the engine was cold? Just trying to figure out if I should mention these specific symptoms when I take it to the workshop. Really appreciate your help on this!

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, I totally had the same experience with cold engine performance being worse, the jerking was definitely more noticeable during the first 5-10 minutes after starting up. In my case, I initially thought it was the throttle valve too, but when the mechanic hooked up the diagnostic tool, the readings from the accelerator pedal module were inconsistent. What's interesting is that I also didn't have any check engine light when my issues started. It wasn't until about 4 weeks in that the light finally came on. With your mileage being similar to what mine was when I had the problem (I was at around 132000 KM), and given the very similar symptoms, I'd bet we're looking at the same issue. When you take it to the workshop, definitely mention the cold start behavior and the jerking during acceleration, these were key symptoms that helped diagnose my problem. One other thing, did you notice if the jerking gets worse when you're trying to maintain a steady speed? That was another telltale sign in my case. Let me know if you need any other specifics about what I experienced!

Yes, actually! The jerking is super annoying when I'm trying to maintain a steady speed, especially during moderate acceleration. It's like the car can't decide whether to speed up or slow down. Really glad you mentioned this because I wasn't sure if I should bring it up at the workshop. Thanks so much for all these details, they're incredibly helpful. I'll definitely get it checked out this week and mention all these symptoms, especially the cold start issues and the steady-speed jerking. Sounds like I might be looking at a similar repair cost for the accelerator pedal module. Will update here once I get it sorted out. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's given me a much better idea of what I might be dealing with!
