BMW XM Sunblind Malfunction: Fix Tips & Mechanic Advice

Hi all! Having trouble with my 2023 BMW XM (144k km). The sunblind is acting up, won't move properly and gets stuck. The system's throwing an error code too. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with a similar sunblind issue in their BMW? Any recommendations on what to expect for repairs or trustworthy mechanics who've fixed this successfully? Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey there! I had the exact same problem with my 2020 BMW X6 M last month. The sunblind motor was failing, causing that jerky movement and error code. My sunblind would get stuck halfway and sometimes wouldn't respond at all. The issue turned out to be pretty serious, the motor unit had completely failed and there was also some damage to the guide rails. The repair involved replacing the entire motor assembly and realigning the mechanism. They had to take down most of the headliner to access everything properly. The job took about 6 hours at the shop, needed special diagnostic tools to reset the system, and definitely wasn't a DIY fix. Make sure whoever you choose knows their way around BMW electronics because they'll need to properly code the new motor to work with your car's systems. If it helps, my symptoms started just like yours, intermittent at first, then got progressively worse until it completely stopped working.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience with the sunblind repair. That's super helpful, especially since I'm dealing with pretty much identical symptoms right now. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks with it? Just want to know what I might be getting myself into with this repair.

Hey again! Great to give you an update! Since getting mine fixed at the shop, the sunblind has been working perfectly, smooth as butter with no more problems or error messages. The total repair came to 330 € for replacing the motor and doing all the necessary coding. Money well spent, if you ask me! The mechanic really knew their stuff with BMWs, and they sorted it out in one go. It's been about three months now, and I haven't had a single issue since. The sunblind moves silently and smoothly, just like when the car was new. No more of that annoying sticking or jerky movement. I'd definitely say go for getting it repaired sooner rather than later. Mine got worse pretty quickly when I first noticed the problem, and waiting might just lead to more damage. Totally worth getting it sorted properly by someone who knows what they're doing with BMW systems. Let me know if you need any other info about the repair!

Thanks for all that detail! I actually just got mine fixed yesterday after your advice. Turned out to be similar to your issue, faulty motor and some worn guide rails. The mechanic I found was pretty great, knew exactly what they were dealing with when I described the problem. They charged me a bit more than you paid, but they did throw in a full system check while they were at it. The best part? The sunblind is working perfectly now, no more strange noises or getting stuck halfway. Such a relief not having to deal with that annoying error message popping up anymore! Really glad I didn't try to wait it out or attempt any DIY fixes. The mechanic showed me the old motor parts, and they were in pretty rough shape. Definitely needed a professional touch. Think I've found my new go-to BMW specialist, way better than my last mechanic experience. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction with this. Saved me a lot of headache trying to figure it out on my own!
