BMW Z3 Fuel System Troubles: Stalling and Gauge Problems

Hi all, need help with my 2000 BMW Z3 fuel system issues. Car stalls at idle, fuel gauge is stuck, and CEL is on. I suspect a faulty fuel level sensor. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Interested to hear what repairs were done and how much it cost to fix. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs. Had a similar issue with my 2002 BMW 3-series a couple years ago, and I also own an older 5-series. Dealt with almost identical symptoms, stalling at idle and wonky fuel gauge. Turned out it was just a blown fuse for the fuel pump circuit. Had my regular workshop check it out, and they found and replaced the defective fuse in about 30 minutes. Total bill came to 52 Euro, mostly labor. But hey, before jumping to conclusions, could you share more details? Like any recent work done on the car, specific error codes from the CEL, or if you've noticed any other electrical issues? This info would help narrow down if you're facing the same problem I had or if it's something else.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I just had my service done last month and my car has 71787 KM on the clock. Actually, I haven't checked the fuses yet, that's a really good suggestion and definitely a cheaper fix to try first. I haven't noticed any other electrical issues, but the CEL code reader shows P0463. Been meaning to get the codes checked properly but wanted to get some community input before heading to the shop. Did your car also sputter a bit before stalling completely? Mine does that sometimes, especially when it's been sitting idle at traffic lights.

Hey again! Yeah, I remember when my Z3 had that exact P0463 code, it's specifically related to the fuel level sensor circuit. And yes, my car did that same sputtering thing at traffic lights before stalling! It was super annoying and made me nervous every time I had to stop. After my earlier post about the fuse, I actually ended up having to replace the entire fuel pump assembly because the level sensor is part of that unit. The fuse check was a good starting point, but it turned out to be more serious in my case. The repair cost me about 800 for parts and labor, but it was worth every penny because it fixed all the issues, the stalling, sputtering, and wonky fuel gauge. Just a heads up, if you're getting the same symptoms with that specific error code, checking the fuses is still a good first step, but be prepared that you might need the whole pump assembly replaced. The good news is that once it's fixed, it usually lasts a really long time. My Z3 has been running perfectly for 40,000 km since the repair. Make sure you get it checked soon though, running the fuel pump with a faulty sensor can sometimes cause more damage in the long run.

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! This is exactly the kind of real-world experience I was hoping to hear about. It's actually a relief to know someone else dealt with the same P0463 code and similar symptoms. I'll definitely check those fuses first thing tomorrow, but I'll also start setting aside some money in case I need the full pump assembly replaced. Really appreciate the heads up about the potential 800 cost, that helps me plan better. I think I'll get it looked at next week since I don't want to risk any additional damage to the pump. The car's been great otherwise, so it's worth fixing properly. Really grateful for all your help and insights on this!
