Hey, thanks for sharing your Z4 experience! That's really helpful to know about the transponder chip issue, I'm actually getting similar symptoms right now. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much the whole fix cost you? Also, has everything been working smoothly since the repair, or have you run into any other key-related problems?

Hey! Happy to give you an update about my Z4 situation. I actually just got back from having this fixed last week, it was indeed similar to what you're experiencing. The total came to 37€ for a full key battery replacement and reprogramming, which was way less than I initially feared after my previous issues. Since getting it sorted, everything's working perfectly, no more warning lights, and the keyless entry is as good as new. It's such a relief not seeing that "Battery in key empty" message anymore! This time around I was lucky that it really was just the battery, unlike my previous experience with the transponder chip that I mentioned before. Just a heads up though, if you do need to get yours checked, make sure they test the whole key system, not just the battery. Better to catch any potential issues early. But honestly, there's a good chance yours is just a simple battery problem like mine turned out to be this time around.

Thanks for the detailed update! I actually went ahead and took my Z3 to a mechanic yesterday. You won't believe it, but my experience was completely different from my last nightmare visit. The mechanic was super professional and diagnosed the problem right away. Turns out I had both a dead key battery and a loose connection in the door sensor. The whole thing took about an hour and cost me €75, including parts and labor. Money well spent, honestly. The keyless entry's working perfectly now, and all those annoying warning lights are gone. Should've done this weeks ago instead of worrying about it! Really glad I asked here first, your advice about getting the whole system checked saved me from just replacing the battery myself and potentially missing the door sensor issue. The car's running like a charm now. Thanks again for sharing your experience. It definitely helped me make the right call!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2003 BMW Z4 last year. The keyless entry died out of nowhere, and I got those annoying warning lights too. My experience showed it wasn't just the key battery. While replacing the key battery is usually straightforward, in my case the key had internal damage from years of use. The transponder chip inside was failing, which caused communication issues with the car's security system. The repair needed a complete key reprogramming and internal component replacement. It wasn't a quick fix like just swapping a battery, but it wasn't super serious either. Just more complex than expected. Quick tip: If you're getting error codes along with the key problems, get it checked soon. These symptoms sometimes point to more than just a dead key battery. In BMWs of this era, the key and car security system are pretty integrated. Hope this helps with your decision.
