I haven't checked the transfer case oil level yet. Where is the transfer case located, and what should I look for in terms of the oil's condition? Could defective gears in the transfer case produce these symptoms?

Yep, defective gears can definitely cause those issues. It's usually connected to the gearbox. Honestly, if you're not sure, best take it to a workshop. Seriously, messing with the gears without knowing what you're doing is asking for trouble. A gearbox slip is not something to ignore, it might make the car dangerous. Get it checked out!

I will arrange for a qualified mechanic to inspect the transfer case and address the issue. It was in fact the transfer case and the repair cost me 330€. Thanks again for your assistance.

That sounds familiar! I had almost the same symptoms on my C2 a while back. Is it worse when the engine's cold? I'd check the transfer case oil level first. When was the last time you checked it?
