The warning light hasn't come on yet, but your description of the pedal feel is spot on. If it wasn't a leak, what was the cause in your case?

Turns out, my front pads were paper thin, completely shot. The pistons in the calipers had to travel further to compensate, which lowered the fluid level in the reservoir. It's kind of like how a balloon looks less full when you stretch it out. Get your brakes checked ASAP before you have a real issue. I would advise taking it to a workshop and have them inspected.

I appreciate the help! I'll book it in for a brake inspection. It ended up being worn front and rear brakes, plus a service. The total repair cost was 480€.

Interesting. I've a C4 as well. I had something similar happen a while ago. The pedal feel was… off, kind of like trying to squish a sponge. I ignored it for a bit, stupidly. Does the brake warning light come on?
